Welcome to the forum - it may be worth doing a search on here to find a few co's.

Im 22 3yrs ncb and in central london. my renewal has come thro at £775 with Bell direct on my 54 vxt. I always find that the admiral group (admiral, bell, elephant, diamond) are the cheapest. You can also put on people that are less risk than you (like your dad) which reduces the premium significantly.

I would strongly advise that you dont just go TPFT, with the amount of VX's that get written off on here it could all end in tears! Im fully comp, 21, 0NCB and paying £1200 with bell (with my sister on the policy it came down £300) but thats for an N/A. I think the turbo is at least 2 ins groups higher. The quote on a VXT was just too much for me I would strongly advise that you dont just go TPFT, with the amount of VX's that get written off on here it could all end in tears! Best quote for me so far. 27, 7yrs NCD, 1 non-fault/no claim (3rd party ins full liability) accident last year, fully comp, inc mods, 90 day green card, all the normal extra stuff £700, adrian flux. I thought quite good!

Admiral thumbsup and add your Mum or girlfriend, always brings it down. Just make sure you dont incur cost when they actually drive it... :P

I agree, Admiral and add your Mum. Brought my price down by 150 quid - and they were already the cheapest! Mine's due for renewal, 25yo, 4 years NCB, parked outside, NA, and if I didn't have mods my insurance with Admiral would be 425 quid! (Which is freakin' cheap!) Edit: Just checked for a turbo, 672 quid. Edit 2: And 785 quid for a VXR... hmmmm :) Edit 3: OK, they've totally lost it - 1600 quid for fully comp on a Ferrari 430! Also worth checking which is cheapest between Admiral, Elephant and Bell Direct - all the same company, but their prices do vary - could save you an extra 20 quid or so.

I know this is the voice of sensibility here, but if this is your first semi-powerful MR car, I would say that an NA for a couple of years might not be such a bad idea. Especially if you plan to use it in all seasons.

Insurance is only the start of it. Rear tyres will do 6k miles and petrol will be 20 to the gallon. If you are worried about the insurance then get yourself a Saxo VTR!!

On a VXT? This post may be considered to be a slight exaggeration :beat:

There are few cars that can match the performance of a VXT for the money. The car is now attracting much younger drivers as VXT's can be picked up for £12k ish. Two years ago they were £15-£16k.

That does not mean that they are the cheapest car to run. I guess my point was that a car is not just about buying it. Unless you drive around like a saint then I don't believe the figures I quoted are far off the mark.

You'd have to be driving a VXT pretty damn hard (or have non-standard tyres on) to go through a set of rears in 6000 miles of road driving - and if you are driving it that hard you're likely to go through the front tyres of the Saxo in a similar amount of time. I had a few hot-hatches before my VX, and I went through front tyres on those much faster than I go through rear tyres on the VX (and I'm not one for wheelspinning)

Fuel might be accurate, but again it's not that much less than a hot-hatch will give when pushed hard. I regularly got my Ibiza Cupra under 20mpg.

For what you get it is an insanely cheap way to get a seriously fast car. Unfortunately as the prices drop they come into reach of the relatively new driver, who may not have the experience or cool-headedness to drive a VXT safely, at least all year round (obviously there are plenty of young drivers on here who show that not to be the case all the time). This will cause insurance prices to rise for all of us, and quite possibly cause other companies to follow Greenlight's example of refusing to insure VXTs.

I bought my NA aged 23 with no experience of MR cars - at the time it was at the limit of my budget. For the money I paid you can now buy a stage 2 turbo relatively easily - but I suspect that the learning experiences I had in my early days of driving the 2.2 might have ended more expensively had I been driving a VXT.
