How can I prolong the life of my xbox? Keep hearing they overheat or die of dust, or small little microscopic men or something.

Should I raise it off the wood to allow for better circulation? Should it not be confined in a small space? I assume I should be vacuuming it often? Any tips??

Yeah, that's not going to be an option! :P I use it for music, DVDs and games so it gets used most days

Mines in a similar site to yours, but the back is off the unit where the 360 lives... gives the power supply more air too. i guess cleaning out the dust would help as thats what most of the orginals die from.

ive heard conflicting things about those intercoolers..... ie they dont allow MAX airflow through so when it gets really hot it actually restricts flow etc. and that warranty claims ahve been denied as M$ can tell if one was fitted etc....

I dont think that can be true,

its a plug on fan that goes in between the power inpur and fans (the power is drawn from the standard power adaptor) all it does is have 3 fans blowing on the other 2.

i doubt it alot that microsfot coud prove that you used one!

one of the things i read was that the intercooler caused the unit to char round one of its fans or similar.... meh my xbox is fine so i dont care lol. also not using it on mega hot days is wise... my pc used to eat itself on really hot days

Mine is an original and not wanting to give it a kiss of death has been fine. Stands vertically with good air flow only thing next to it is the HDDVD drive :P I suppose it could do with a vacuum. Problem is the hype of failures. I work in the service industry (white goods) we have 2% failure within warranty, european targets are 3% most companies run at 5%. Lets assume 1,000,000 units sold 20,000 of our appliances are allowed to have a "problem" if we say 1/4 of those that fail are heat related failures thats 5,000 units a significant number in any case but small fry really compared to the 980,000 working perfectly..... You just have to adjust the figures given the desired percentages. ok its not nice having a dud but statistically your not likely to have one go pop. Even more so if you follow the instruction manual fully...... When your pushing technology failures do increase but we all aim to be the best and sometimes we pay the price. If yours does fail just read up on some european law regarding warranty lengths ;) Its in consumers favor for once.
