Just playing with some ideas at the moment. If I were to put a VX220 Turbo engine into an NA, what would I need to change? I know the cars very well, but just want to check a few things. I plan to use a Turbo rear clam, boot and ears. Are the sills different? Is the rear subframe different? I know the shocks are different - what about the wishbones?

have a look at courtenaysports website. they have the turbo conversion there "For 2.2 owners seeking alternative power we can offer a Z20LET Turbo Transplant into the 2.2 16v. This consists of a complete ZLET engine with all anciliaries such as ECU, airflow meter, intercooler, all necessary turbo pipework and additional sensors and switches as required on the standard VXT, F23 Turbo Gearbox, all the wiring modifications needed for the ZLET engine, additional cooling duct in the undertray, turbo ducting for turbocharger cooling, VXT exhaust, VXT O/S/R lower wishbone (for oil filter clearance) and necessary rear clamshell modifications. The fully fitted price is £5250 including VAT. "

Sorry to sound like a killjoy, but would it not be cheaper / easier to sell your NA and by a turbo???

I guess the immobiliser may be an issue as I believe there's something built into the key. Other than that, probably what the courtenay site says. Had you considered fitting the Saab 2L turbo unit like badster did (afaik)? Or possibly for a bit more NA fun the Vectra C's VVT engine or the Alfa Romeo 2.2 JTS. All of these use the same block so I believe could bolt onto an original gearbox and mountings.

I already have a spare stage 1 Turbo engine with I think 20,000 miles on complete with absolutely everything. Just looking for a cheap VX to put it in and though the cheapest would be a high mileage NA with some problems, like Lunas LY or a lightly damaged one on eBay. I have the ignition, keys, ECU, gearbox, dial pod, etc...

I suppose buying a tubby would be easy but if your in your late teens early twentys then there's nowt like a 2.2 log book with a 2.0ltr turbo conversion ;)

Theres not a huge amount of work involved [depending on what you consider as huge amount]

You know yourself once you start stripping the VX there's not much to them, if you have a donor car then the swap over is easy enough. Courtenays 'wording' makes it sound alot more technical than it actually is - ''turbo ducting for turbocharger cooling''.. wooowzer!! Although the cooling/air intake will be the main problem/issue - but your using a tubby clam with tubby ears so that will help.

I'd also look further afar than this site for gearbox, clutch etc info - alot of people on here seem to be narrow minded when it comes to conversions [unless so and so does it - it will never work kindda thing  ] If you have the time & patience & money anythings possible.

Thanks, I think I will give it a go, I already have most parts including a subframe, rear clam, engine, gearbox etc. Will also give me a chance to mod it during the build - charge cooler etc. There's another NA I know of, I may put an offer in and put the engine in there. I am confident stripping the car back to it's bare bones. I have not done engine conversions before, although my dad has.

O/S/R wishbone on the N/A to turbo is (was) different as it needs to clear the oil filter, however all these wishbones have now been superceded to the Turbo wishbone if you order them from GM. You'll need the engine, 'box (as the 2.2 box is diffrerent to the turbo box - started motor is on the wrong side), engine wiring loom, ecu, micro switches off the pedals that are used to trigger the OE recirculation valve in the turbo. It should all fit ok and then you just need to connect up the wiring loom.

The other thing I wanted to check was if the turbo ears will fit straight onto the NA with the turbo clam. I assume the sills are the same and it will fit. I have been meaning to talk to you guys at Courtenays. My dad has a CS3 Turbo from you guys that we rebuilt (it was written off by the guy who had it tuned). I talked to someone there a while ago who was going to look for copies of the invoices so I can see exactly what has been done. I see the charge cooler has changed since. My dads is a small pre-rad that sits in the front grille. Now its a larger rad which sits under the engine rad. Have been looking at getting another charge cooler if Im going to be swapping engines on this new car, not sure which route to go down. We do a lot of custom made stainless steel and alloy stuff here for boat fuel tanks etc. and have access to the pumps you used in my dads car as we have an account with a supplier.
