I feel the gear stick is up to high for quick changes. Has anyone shortened theirs, and if they have how easy a job to do?

Isn't Minime in the process of having it done by Regal? Read that somewhere I think. Try a search. :)

I did it. I removed the stock knob and cut away the threaded part, about 1 inch long. then you have to buy another knob (I got a leather one) to fit into the shortened stalk. I might take a pic tomorrow while visiting my baby having the front end removed and fixed... :D

Has anyone else shortened their gear stick and replaced the gear knob? Ricky, did you take any pics of your new shorted gear shift? I have thick legs, around the knees especially, and I found in a recent test drive that when lifting off the clutch having shifted into third, but especially fifth, that my knee is being obstructed by the steering wheel and stick. I thought about shortening it, but I dont really want to make some irrepairable changes to the car. Shortening it (I hope) will allow my knee better access between the whell and the stick. Seat was all the way back. Perhaps its something I just need to get used too, but it did seem very intrusive. I bough one of the MOMO leather geat knobs off eaby that I think some other users here have bought. If I cut the stick, can I still attach this knob if there isn't any thread? Cheers, Andrew

Hi Andy

I did that - the momo is self threading so don't cut all the thread off - I left about 1/2cm and it fitted fine.
The momo race air leather gear knob for Rover MGFs really looks and feels amazing in the VX. This is the gearknob the vx should have had - it totally enhances the driving experience, it really is THAT good.

Thanks Doc! My wife thought I was mad buying a new gear knob for a car I didn't even own yet, and she's probably not alone :jump: How much did you cut off to leave 1/2 cm and what was the best way to remove the aluminium knob? Cheers, Andrew

To remove the old one you can either destroy with a pipe wrench or use a strap and try and unscrew it more gently. I was able to unscrew mine by hand - but I think that this is uncommon. The MGF leather knob makes a massive difference. Matches the interior, and is much lighter. Lambo

At well frankly far too much weight myself I'm not too worried about the weight saving with the Momo leather knob. The main issue for me is being able to comfortably shift and steer without me left knee feeling like its done something wrong in a past life. I had to admit I have pretty thick legs, but I really just want a bit more room. Has anyone re-threaded their gear stick having cut it down? I'll send in a pic of my predicament when I PICK UP MY CAR TOMORROW!! :groupjump: Can't wait!

Been wondering this myself aswell. Its a bit drastic though if it doesn't work out, which kinda put me off the idea until this post raised its ugly head  Bought a nice new knob for my Elise at Donnington the other week which would go nicely with the shorter stick :) (Please no nasty, horrible jokes about knobs and Elise drivers :P )

My Momo isn't self-threading. I got it from Halfords, and has different size sleeves to fit the shaft, but doesn't use the threaded portion. It has grub-screws to grip the shaft instead. The result is that you get a shorter change without drastic cutting-type actions. If it's still too long, then you can cut the threaded portion off. Steve
