Hi Guys,

Sorry to start up another one of these post but ive just spent the last 20 mins reading old threads but i still have unanswered questions!

Ive just sprayed my Vee and Mesh Black, now the silver surround looks even more out of place than it did before!

i am tempted to go down the Autoglass route but i have no damage and cant bring myself to break it myself!

The only other option is a respray. I'll do it in satin black the same as the grill.

i understand that i need a flexible type of paint and plastic primer, but do you also rub down the silver first or just clean it up and spray it right on?

Also what is the duraility like? The threads i found from JayK and Justin182 who has done their own were great, but both sold their cars shortly afterwards.

i dont want to do it if as soon as a jet washer touches it it flakes off etc.

What are your thoughts? Anyone had any problems? I read a recent thread of paint cracking within days of painting but this seems to be because primer wasn't used.

Cheers

N1K

Edit - Autoglym Satin Black?

You only need a scratch on the inside of the screen right in your line of vision to justify a replacement. The sort of thing that might happen if you wiped the inside of your Rover 45 screen with a the back of your hand and managed to run your watch along the screen too. Hypothetically speaking.

Had this exact discussion with a guy from Autoglass HQ in the pub the other night. The fitting branch aren't in the slightest bit interested about whether the screen is damaged if you're going through insurance. As long as you say it is damaged to their call centre on the phone, that's what is written down on the job sheet and a replacement is fitted.

My bigger concern is them taking the clam off to fit it, if they've never done a VX/Elise before. Gulp!

I've had two fitted (yes, two  ) first one at RAC [nightmare, didn't have a clue what they were doing] the other at Autoglass [who were great, I even phoned their call centre later on to say thanks]

There isn't any need to remove the clam, all it needs is the two top bolts closest to the windscreen to be loosened, and some rag put between the chassis/box and the clam to lift it away an inch or so thumbsup - N1k, you should be able to do the same when spraying it :) - you may find it helps to also loosen the smaller bolts by the door hinge

Both told me that they cannot use a heat-pack due to the curvature of the screen, so even the tiniest chip means a new screen (tho it took them three attempts to get a VXR one, Vaux kept on sending scratched ones!)

Not much help, but.... My vee and screen surround have been resprayed metallic blue (similar to the coral blue finish). Some may hate this but IMO makes the car look better than de-veed and black surround. Car is 56 and no sign at all of wear or tear on either of the resprays, think the respray was Jan 2007. No way of telling a respray until you get really really close. Only downside is I have no idea what paint it is or who did it. The car's previous owner isn't on here, but could phone him and ask him where he did it (all I know i he was from Stafford, which is where teh car is from). So it is possible to do it, but not sure which route you want to go down. PM if you want me to call the previous owner.
