I´ve been looking at purchasing a rear silencer for my NA. I think that the Janspeed seem cheap, but is it cheap&dirty? Loud? Anyone else with experience regarding resulting sound levels etc? Build quality? Anyone? Imnotworthy

can only vouch for the Milltek, and its build is superb. The twin pipes look great. sounds amazing when teamed up with a viper induction kit

They do! I asked them and they replied:

Dear Torbjorn,

Thank you for your enquiry. We manufacture a free flow 200CPSI sports
catalyst section and sports silencer for the VX220. The sports cat has a
retail price of £251.06, and the system is £280.85.

Best regards

Wow, that's cheap! Actually, it a realistic price as that's pretty much what the Elise guys pay for their exhausts and I don't see why the VX should eb any more expensive. Elise forums seem to rate the Janspeed although say it is very loud.

Well this is all rather a turn-up. I've been thinking about a centre section for a while and Janspeed have both the rep and a good price. Even better if they produce the vauxhall sports exhaust coz then it would be a full janspeed system and hopefully everything would be 'matched'. sweet Ben

Too loud wouldn´t be nice. Maybe for the occasional track day, but not for touring. I was thinking of cutting the original open to get some more sound, but when the Janspeed is so cheap, I thought I might as well fit one of those. But not if it is VERY loud!

BTW here´s a link to a German site with some piccys of silencer modifications:

Woah! Hang on! I'm just thinking about it at the moment :D

If Janspeed make the vauxhall sports exhaust then I am considering some more serious investigation of their catalyst section.

If anyone is thinking about the Janspeed, I think Sinclaires might supply them...

A quote from the>Elise FAQ<

Janspeed is loud and raspy, it's also relatively small & easy to fit. This seems to be one of the loudest exhausts (get the anti-tizz bracket fitted at the same time though - part number A111E6234S: or your local Rover dealer for half the price, part number:WCU100990 (thanks to MattR for that :o)). The Janspeed stainless steel exhaust is "for track use only".

...sound familiar? Definitly supports the vauxhall sports exhaust theory...

Some further >insight from pistonheads<

Ben

That's a great table - and will be a very helpful resource. A couple of suggestions, IIRC some exhausts claim power improvements - might be worth noting the claims. Also isn't the VX Sports exhaust noisier than 95dB so would be ">95dB" - does anyone have the actual figure? And IIRC Milltek is 93dB James

IIRC the vauxhall sports exhaust is 98db. Do the claimed power gains apply for a back-box only upgrade? I'd have thought the gains would primarily come from replacing the catalyst section. Might be worth indication which manufacturers provide both sections. Ben

OK, I thought the limit was 95 dB even for racing use? And the "claimed bhp" listed I have found on the net and in quotations sent to me. I do not really trust the suppliers in this matter, though
