Hello All On the brink of getting a PS3 but not sure about the 40GB version as it isn't backward compatible (I still want to play the odd PS2 game). I've had conflicting information and would like to know if anyone out there knows if the 80GB PS3 is about to be launched in the UK and if so, when is it coming? I don't want to shell out on a 40GB version to find a higher-spec machine is on the horizon. Sony still say on the Playstation website that there are no plans for a UK launch but a chap in GAME says they're coming out but he's not sure when. There's even someone selling what he describes as UK PAL 80GB machines on E-bay but I'm not convinced... Any information would be appreciated. Cheers!

the release machines WERE 80GB backward compatable items, that then got phased out for the cheaper 40GB one... so seeing 80GB ones on ebay wont be a shock.

I thought the release machines were 60GB and these have been discontinued. Was there an 80GB version from the start? As I understand it, at the moment, the only kit available in the UK is the 40GB version. Except on e-bay where any version seems to be selling for way over the odds...

they were selling the 60gb ones not 80gb so i'd be wary of the e-bay one. i have a 60gb, love it!

It was 60gig not 80gig

the 80gig ones may be genuinely 80gig as there is a way of upgrading them but this means no warrantee etc

meh lol. I thought the DIY HDD increase wasnt a warranty issue as Sony have given you instructions and the ability to change the HDD and also install Linux on there etc.

This is why I want to know if there are plans to bring the 80GB version to the UK. They are available to most of the rest of the world and the internet is full of rumour and counters from Sony. I'd be really chuffed to find a brand new 60GB machine but only if I didn't have to pay over-inflated prices for it. I'd be very happy with a 40GB version if there wasn't a higher-spec machine coming soon or it was backwards compatible to the PS2 . Oddly, it is compatable with the PS1. The problem seems to be that Sony have denied things in the past that ultimately come to fruition.

The last thing I heard was that there may be plans for a 120GB version........ Denied by Sony....

What is the advantage to the bigger HDD? Every console I have had a HDD over 20gb would be pretty useless unless you hack it.

I've heard of people who download a lot of game and movie content as well as music and photos. For me, I think 40GB is more than enough. My reason for wanting a bigger HDD is the other advantages that come on that machine: backward compatability, more USB ports, memory card readers etc...

I don't think even the 80gb has backward compatability (it isn't PAL, is it?). I wanted to get a 60gb one, but as per my other thread I got scammed on E-Bay for one, I'd never spend that kind of money on E-Bay again, so for I have to settle for the 40gb console. You said earlier that the 40gb is compatible with PS1 games, is this true? Good if it is. When Paypal have sorted me out I'll probably get a 40gb from Amazon, free HDMI lead and GT5 Prologue for £285'ish. thumbsup After all, the only PS2 games I'm likely to really want to play are Buzz, when we have people over and are having a laugh.

I heard today that the 80Gb version may not be backward compatable so I think you're right. And you're correct to say that the 80GB machine isn't UK PAL as it's only available in North America and South Korea so it's NTSC. It's for this reason I was suspicious of a chap selling 'UK PAL' 80GB machines on e-bay. I'd seen your pervious woes and I have to say I'm nervous about the thought of getting one from e-bay, too. I would want to collect the thing and take cash if I decide to do that.

I think I'm going to go for a 40GB version from GAME and trade in one of my PS2 consoles and a few games.

Incidentally, Buzz is one of the games I want to keep...

Right. I went out and got a 40GB machine today. After all the wondering if the 80GB kit was coming, I decided it wasn't worth the wait and probably won't do what I want it to anyway. So I popped to GAME and got the GT5 pack with two games, an extra controller and 2 years accidental damage cover for £330. This included trading-in an old PS2 (I had two...) and eight or nine old PS2 games (mainly at £1 a piece).. Very happy and now looking forward to joining the latest Playstation revolution... Thanks for all the help, people. chinky chinky

That's the pack I got - GT5 plus a game. I then took an extra game and an extra controller which were both half price as a 'Manager's Special' if I took out accidental damage cover. It was a no-brainer as it made it much cheaper despite paying a bit for the insurance. Take into account the £40 I got for the PS2 kit and a pretty good deal all round, I reckon. thumbsup

That sounds good Thurtene, out of interest what were the other two games you got? When Paypal have sorted me out, I'll get the 40gb GT5 pack from Amazon, with a free HDMI cable and Assassins Creed, it should come to about £309 all in, I may also get another game or the Blue Tooth DVD remote too. I'm getting vey impatient now though, my claim with Paypal should be closed tonight (no response from seller), so hopefully should have my money back in a few days. Reading the posts and seeing the footage on youtube of GT5 and Assassins Creed, I can't wait!!

I got Star Wars Lego (another game we play in the house for a bit of fun) and Burnout - Paradise City. I kind of wish I'd traded in a few more PS2 games as the more I think about it the less likely I am to play them again... By the way, I've just had my first stab at GT5 and it's very good. I haven't read or contributed to the thread about it on here but I like some of the touches you don't get in the previous version (such as the light being too bright for a second when you come out of tunnels... :) ). Let us know what you settle on.
