My car is going in for its MOT next week, but my front number plate is coming loose, and concerned they may fail it The plate is held on by two screws and some black rubberized double sided tape but the tape is loosing its stick. Any idea where I can get hold of some of this tape to replace the old stuff? Im assuming the old stuff wont come off easily either any tips on cleaning it off? One of the screws holding the plate on seems to be threaded and wont tighten up, do they actually screw into a nut or just into the fibre glass? Am I right in thinking that the plate must be secured by screws otherwise its an MOT failure? I remember a post where someone had used Velcro and it failed because it wasn't considered permanent fixing. thanks

Failing a car on the registration plate being held on by Velcro is somewhat anal. I'd always use extra strong Velcro to hold mine on.

Mines held on by foam pads for number plates from Halfrauds. Used the thicker black ones, not failed an MOT with it yet. For getting the old sticky off i used brute force and pig ignorance and WD40 to soften it up. Then washed the area with water, dried it and wiped it with the alko-wipe that came with the pads.

:yeahthat: I used the Velcro, which is mentioned many times on here, but the plate kept falling off. Of his own accord, the mechanic at Vauxhall himself stuck it on with the double-sided sticky foam - so one assumes it's MOT-legal thumbsup

Mine is stuck on with Dual Lock - it's like velcro but doesn't have a male/female setup.

Looks a bit like Sticklebricks.

Got mine off Ebay and it's good stuff - strong enough to hold the plate in plate but will let the plate come off if it starts to foul.

Edit - this stuff. I bought clear colour though.

Double glazing double sided tape, would stick a chair to a wall then you could sit on it!!! Your car will pass an MOT even with cable ties holing the plate on, as long as its secured then its fine. Good luck mate.

I have a feeling that the regs might have changed recently (with the size/spacing/supplier crackdown) and that plates might now need to be secured by screws to "prevent" number plate theft. As if that'll help! Not sure if there is an age cutoff point where it doesn't apply or whether it will only apply to cars with OEM fixing holes. Fecked if I'm drilling my clams to fix a number plate on with screws though. I've seen some fake self adhesive numberplate screws somewhere in the past (for those who want to tinker with the appearance of the registration numbers) so might be worth getting some of them to make it look like it's "properly" attached.

That heavy duty velco is amazing - my last numberplate smashed when I knocked it doing a 3-point turn, rather than drop off. Had two MoT's, last one a month ago, without any issue, but poss it depends on who's doing it. Have heard about lowered VX's failing on height of brakelights so who knows..

My rear plate is attached with extra-strength velcro and Plans (Motorsport) passed it at MOT. They also supplied the plate ;) JJ

Cable ties has me thinking.... My front is a 3/4 one, MOT in a month, " if i were to drill 4 lettle holes 2 on the left 2 on the right then run 1 cable tie through the left 2 and one through the right i could use the small plate as a holder for the big one..... see red dots. providing i did not obscure the letters and the cable ties were white. Would this pass the MOT? Could save me a lot of aggro if it did! See red dots.... Attached File  PLATE.jpg   13.26KB   2 downloads
