Any advice? The standard one's a pretty dire and the one's in mine are shot with some half-wit obviously turning them up way beyond their capacity and almost blowing the buggers. I was looking at one of the new Alpine MP3/USB memory stick head units with their new speakers with built in tweeters as a straight forward replacement for the standard kit. Looking at £150 for the head unit and just over £100 for the pair of speakers. I was toying with the idea of a sub and extra speakers in the front somewhere but not sure if it's worth it or even needed. Any tips suggestions ideas etc and of course pics if possible would be appreciated :)

Hi,

If you have an iPod you won't find a much better set-up than this

I bought a top of the range Alpine head unit and it made some difference. However, with Alpine you do have to run a wire to the battery which is a pain.

I went for a Ripspeed headunit (cheap I know) but it has really good sound, plays DVD's on its 3inch screen and has an SD card slot - so no more jumping and skipping choons. Only cost 90 quid from Halfords and they also fitted it free. Then I got a BossBass 600 sub and amp 'all in one' job. Its really slim and fits nicely behind one of the seats. Bass is really good. Cost me about 80quid + delivery off ebay. The speakers allready fitted were ok, but you'll necer get decent bass from them so a sub is the way to go if you want some oomph. :D

I changed my head unit and speakers last weekend. I went for a Sony IPod jobbie and Sony speakers (the old speakers were knackered and too big so they rattled like hell). The Ipod now sits on the dash by the passenger door. Total cost was about £180 and they are loud enough to make me look like a rude boi chav whilst sat at traffic lights and I can certainly hear it with the roof off travelling at 70mph. IMHO there is no need for a 'bangin ICE install innit' in a car like the VX. Just spend a couple of hundred quid for a decent head unit and speakers and you will have something that is more than enough for the car. Anything too loud and bits will start dropping off anyway.

I don't want ears bleeding chav boy racer bass, just something with a decent amount of "oomph" as the standard ones are nothing short of pathethic and the head unit lacks any decent kind of EQ or features.

Stick this in your car if your existing speakers give you decent midrange and trebble. I was out yesterday with the roof off doing around 70 (100) ;) and I could still hear the bass even over the road noise.

I had a nice surprise when i went and bought my new VX on Friday, it has new JL audio speakers in place of the old ones, and has a professional install in the passenger footwell of a further two JL audio component 6x9s all run off an amp behind the passenger seat. It also had an alpine head unit but im not sure what one it is. I would seriously recommend doing this as the sound is amazing! There is such clarity and the base is pretty damn beast! I did however have a casualty last night of one of the speaker grills fell off while going round a corner (possibly too fast) lol.

One thing I have noticed is that when you do get a bit of decent bass thru the normal speakers (which isn't very often) there's some really bad vibrations and rattling. I guess this is pretty normal with the VX? Any solutions??

I know yeah, it really annoys me so I have to have the volume below half way or all you here is rattle lol I've thought about putting some Dynamat around the speaker where it mounts to the plastic panel thing. Not got around to it yet but do you think it would work?

Yeah, the vibrations are because the speakers are mounted in flimsy plastic. Either you go for a custom made speaker housing, or you get a subwoofer which comes in its own casing - you can then just 'bolt' it in thumbsup

I have been making my own box, based on Mandarinvx's design. His workman ship is quality compaired to mine, but i have just about finished sealing the box yesterday. Mor sanding to do though. There is a chance the mould may not fit back into the parcel shelf so i am praying when i go back to fit it on the weekend it will. Just need covering and installing.

I haven't bought any components for the mid range or tweeters. I have a 4 channel amp. Does anyone have any recomendations to some good components. I am going for sound quality over loudness.

Here is how mandarin did it Imnotworthy

I take it there will be no useable shelf with this set up. 'Roof in the boot jobbie' then.

Yeah thats right, no shelf at all. TBO i never use that shelf anyway not even for the roof as it could get stolen from there.

Heres the finished article. I'm really pleased with it, just adds that little bit of base the standard speakers were missing. I will probably upgrade the mid range though and put them through the amp also. I can take the box out. It fitted in like a peach and will just pop out but that means taking the seats out.
And of course there is alway room to fit another sub on the right ;)

Looks great mate thumbsup For a 'no-namer' the sub really is great quality :) I'd stick with the big names for components - JBL, Infinity, Alpine etc :)
