My wife has had a Fiesta Zetec-s for a few years and it's a surprisingly good drive, with enough poke to get by and really good handling.

Or if the 1.4 thing is important then an original 1.3 106 Rallye might be fun

You could go for a 1.4 puma, youll get one of those for £2500, there fairly nippy, but the 1.7 is much better (thats my shed!)
If it has to be a 1.4 the I think the Puma is an excellent suggestion.
How about an MG ZR? I think they do that in a 1.4 version?
I think 'up to 1.4' and 'bit of poke' is a bit of an oxymoron

Yeah I think you may be right. However my first car was an AX GT and that was very good. At the moment I am considering;
Corsa 1.2 SXI
Pro's: Cheap as chips to run, insure, tax.
Con's: Slow with a capital 'S'
106 Rallye Phase 1
Pro's: Cheap to insure/tax and fairly fun to drive
Con's: Relatively unreliable
106 Rallye Phase 2
Pro's: Cheap to insure. Great fun to drive.
Con's: As the phase 1
Saxo VTS
Pro's: Cheap to insure, quickest out of the lot
Con's: Tough to find one thats not been ragged or charved up.

A quick look on PH suggests that the 1.4 is rare as hen's teeth.
I don't think Ford sold very many, as when the Puma was out the difference in price was such that most people were happy to pay the little extra and get the 1.7. When they were released people weren't being stung on tax dependant on engine size or anything and fuel prices were much more reasonable.

The last one at least breaks your 1.4 rule - VTS is a 1.6 with a 16 valve head.
I think (and I may be totally wrong here so willing to be corrected) that the Phase 1 106 Rallye has a 1.3 engine whereas the Phase 2 is a 1.6 8 valve - same engine as the Saxo VTR and as the VTS but with the 8 valve head rather than 16 valve. Not sure if reliability would be a problem though - they are very simple mechanicals. Think richy is best placed to comment on all of that.
I still think I'd rather have a 1.4 Puma though.
I'm pretty sure you're correct there..
Why go for a Saxo VTS or a 106 Rallye...... when a 106 gti (1.6 16v- same engine as VTS) is the best of the bunch! Better looking than a VTS and £2500 should get you a nice one with a half leather/alcantara interior. Plus, with some cheap and easy mods (4-2-1 manifold and an induction kit to start) you can start getting some good power.

75BHP Standard. Remap to 105BHP if you need. Very nippy, incredibly economical (65MPG+), Free or £35/yr Tax, Stupidly cheap to insure and engines that would survive a bomb blast!!
Heres a random example: http://search.autotr...mp;max_mileage=
Now wheres my prize!?
