As title says... What do you have? I don't really want to spend £80+ on a new racing type one.... Regards,

Drive onto a block of wood or a couple of bits of scaffold planks and you can use a regular trolley jack. I've invested in one of the racing trolley jacks and they're great - well worth it if you need to jack the car up frequently (which I do swapping sets of wheels on and off depending on weather for trackdays). You got the car for a song so surely there's something in the budget for a jack.....

Taking the front wheels off a trolley jack lowers enough sometimes.

I've been looking at trolley jacks, do I need to buy a racing one or will an ordinary (cheap) trolley jack be sufficient?

Not sure if it's just mine (lowered on coilovers) or on standard vx's also but I've got 2 standard jacks and they still need to be another inch or so lower.

my 2tonne halfords jack works just fine - vxt on std suspension. admittedly it has only a couple of mm clearance, so lowered would be a no no. about £30 I think it was. i would buy a racing jack if i could do it again though - for a few extra quidit is a lot less hassle. isn't rolling it up on wood etc a bit of a gamble though?

:yeahthat:
I drive a wheel up onto my old brake discs. then jack up with halfords jack. The car weighs nowt so doesnt need daft priced jacks to lift. Use your head instead of your wallet.

Scott.

Regards,

I have a cheap trolley jack (circa £20-£25) that will just fit under the VXT jacking point if I remove the circular black top section (whatever that is called). This is held on by a spring split pin that can be pulled out fairly easily with a pair of pliers. My VXT has Nitrons so it is lower than std, but the jack works fine.

A bit of 4x2 about a foot long with one wheel on isn't going anywhere

Found my cheap Halfords jack wouldn't quite go under my standard vx220 - however drove the rear wheels onto a bit of wood and the jack flew under. Don't see why this would be risky, the car isn't going to fall off the wood!

I have a cheap halfrauds jack and like Davemax I have removed the swivel cup from the jack and it fits under fine chinky chinky Seb f if you look at the undertray there should be round stickers there indicating where the jacking points are chinky chinky

the sill is a good place. Look under the car just inline with the back of the door and you should see a blue sticker. Thats a jacking point

Awesome!

Alternatively I have just used an old-school stylee (God did I just type stylee Posted Image ) scissor jack from my MG/Rover.

Yes it is not ideal, but is low enough to chuck it underneath and with the VX weighing less than the MG/Rover (which kicks both wheels up anyway irrespective of which jacking point you use on it) and the car doesn't move on it either.

Managed to change all the wheels over as well as to change the nearside TRE.

I have 2 low racing type jacks and 2 normal type ones - in the past drove onto wood to get jacks under but if your changing things regular - I was and the low jacks worth every penny. I can JUST get the low jack under the front now and is less than a mm from scraping the sill :P LOL DG
