About time i did something with all the MP3's and pics of family What do people do? Might want to stream movies, mainly store pics and mp3's in a robust environment eg mirrored RAID minimum. A can get a NAS and chuck a couple of discs in. Or i have 2 dell servers under my bed  But i guess these beasties will be noisy, overkill and eat electricity! Also i occasionally download torrents - the missus wants to watch the new 24 but we havent got Sky. i dont fancy leaving my laptop on all the time so guess other people have the same issue. i guess its load a linux torrent client onto the linux server and remote onto the server to search/kick of the torrents..? Again, dont know much about linux as i am a windows man.... Any help apprecited! :D

I prefer NAS as they're quieter, smaller and use less leccy, but if you've got a couple of servers already ... chuck one under the stair's you'll not hear the whirring.

For stuff like torrent I use a virtual PC session running on a real PC so if I pick something bad it's an easy fix. (You could have that on your server.)

I'd say go for a NAS of some form. Much lower cost to leave it running 24/7 and you can keep it hidden away just in case of burglaries etc. They also tend to be very flexible and give you some remote access options. I've got a 1.5Tb Buffalo Link Station Live which actually includes a Bit Torrent client and supports Mac's properly as well as PC's. It's DLNA certified so will do media streaming and also works happily with iTunes if you use it. I haven't used the BitTorrent client as I don't really think it's the most secure place to run it and as with Ozzig, I tend to run it on a virtual machine on another part of the network. My desktops and laptops just continually back up new/changed files straight to the NAS in the background and then the NAS copies those changes up onto a online backup service just in case.

Best thing to do IMHO is buy a small, ultra low power, quiet pc something built on an EPIA board/processor (keep an eye out on ebay)

Whack 2003 server on it then use an external usb hdd or internal if the case has room.

Edit: these are great and they do come up on ebay http://www.tranquilp...uk/products.htm
