I need red label (fire proof lining, FIA approved) to be able to start local rallying in september.

These guys seem to be the best value (even better than GRP)

This is ideal in a closed car by far the cheapest and best all rounded

But this can also be used for rallying, can have a visor added in case i have the chance to Pax in a open car.

Or do i buy a £90 bike helmet for TDs and then think about a rallying helmet later, rather than try to kill two birds with one stone?

one a competely seperate note i think these look quite cool (if i was italian with a scooter in italy)

Hi mate, Just go and try them on, I tried a Sparco one when I was looking for one for sprinting and it just wouldn't fit my head shape, either too small or way too big... All comply to the same safety standards so comfort is key, I'd imagine especially if you're wearing it for a long time rallying. Also don't know how much longer the BS/FR label is valid for, something tells me that as of 2010 SNELL only will be approved, although I might be wrong, just something to think about if you're forking out now you don't want to be again next year. Just buy 1 helmet for td's and rally.

A colleague of mine has one of those (and a Vespa) and I just crack up every time I see him pull up at the office wearing it. I don't know why, as I think it looks quite cool, just doesn't work on him/in this country.

lol - you would probably die from smoke inhalation way before any helmet would catch fire.

James you want to buy a *Rally helmet first as last. Peter lloyd in Bridgend is good on price - you can barter there unlike tweeks etc.

Who with, what in, and when are you starting rallying... stage or club?

How the devil are we. :D Yeah the new laws are getting stricter but it's for our best i suppose. Well if your doing gravel events i personally wouldn't dream about getting anything thats not fitted with an intercom - i use a Peltor g78 lid [not cheap] but it's fantastic, it's got a built in ear piece that elimanates most car noise even when not talking. You can pick them up on fleabay for under £200.. i paid £350 for mine in P Llyods.. i think they are around £400+ everywhere else. I'll definitely help if i can - I'm always offered cars thumbsup

One thing to remember is that bike helmets are designed to hit the ground once, then resist being scraped along the ground at high speed - they have a high abrasion resistance. Racing car helmets are disigned to resist multiple impacts over and over again (as it hitting a roll cage) therefore have higher repeated impact resistance.

Don't know if anyone has seen the latest newsletter from LoT but it sounds like some circuits are starting to clamp down on the types of crash helmet allowed on circuit for trackdays. Looks like there may be some doubt as to whether bike helmets will be allowed for use in cars in future. If anyone is in the market for a new helmet, for the National (or whatever) and toying with a budget one or bike specific helmet, maybe safer to pre-empt any rule changes and go for a SNEL2005 or BS 6658 Type A/FR rated helmet.

What kind of money are you looking at for one fitting those regs? A quick search online shows me struggling to find one for under 300 quid that is rated to one of those standards, and while if I was riding a bike then 300 quid would be a pittance for saving my head, it sounds quite a lot for a car that you're fundamentally quite unlikely to flip. Or am I just a cheapskate? (Nothing new there ;) )

These two versions of the same helmet seem to be the cheapest SNEL2005 certified helmets out there, at the moment. No idea just how good they are, or what the fit is like compared with others but, it's at least got the correct label and sticker.

Just seen the latest on this in the LoT email newsletter of 17 March. Looks like our two helmets which are both type 6658 A 1985 will cease to be valid from 1/1/10 at Silverstone and MSV tracks. Hey ho. More money.
