I guess a few stone chips have led to the front grille becoming rusty in places and I should really try to sort it out now. The grille won't come out without clam removal will it?...so I guess that spraying it is a no go? Wire brush it then some Hammerite or something? Thanks (No suggestions of Steinmetz grilles please - I've seen the price, and I don't want to add any more weight!!! )

I had this on my old NA. Wiring brush down, tape up the front of the car and a couple of light spray coats of Hammerite matt black (halfords sell it) job done.

I say light coats to try and avoid too much going back into the crash box. You could paint it by brush but I think you would get a much better finish with the spray.

I am no authority on it, that's just what I did and it worked.

Good thinking about the brush. I'd considered spraying mine but didn't want to get the chargecooler radiator covered in paint. Any special kind of hammerite? How long does it last?

This is what I used

Dont forget hammerite brush cleaner as its a complete ass to get off.

Small paint brush and just masked the inside of the clam vent with masking tape

I did mine with a brush. Put the Hammerite red oxide primer on first which, in hindsight, was a bad move. I got loads of little red blobs/spatter on the crashbox on the other side of the grille. You couldn't see it unless you were pressed up against the grille but I knew it was there and it made it look like the car had had a dodgy respray on an originally red clam or something. Front clam is off at the moment so I just took the opportunity to scrape it off the crashbox with a razor blade. Just debating on whether to fit the new grille that's been sitting in the garage collecting dust for the last 18 months or so. Not sure I can face the grief of hacking off all of the black glue that Lotus used in the first place, though.

Repainted mine a number of times but the problem is treating the rear of the grille. Eventually the rust creeps back from there Eventually replaced mine with stainless steel when the clam was off. thumbsup

I have done brush and spray. Spray gets my vote, either way is fine I reckon.
