Could anybody recommend decent rear brake pads for my turbo? I'm not going to track it, but want decent brakes at a reasonable price. I'll probably buy off ebay. - I've only had it 3 days, so don't know much about anything. My mechanic said they were 65% worn and might need changing after a couple of thousand miles. I think they have brembo ones at the moment. - I don't know if that's standard? I'd guess they'd be too expensive! - Anyway, I was thinking 'Mintex', Yellowstuff or Greenstuff. Other suggestions that are not too expensive are welcome. Any descriptions of their benefits and price would be good too. (I'll be doing 15,000 a year - mostly motorway) Thanks Michael

I'd change the full set (front and rear) to Mintex 1144's if you're unsure what's fitted at the moment, can be bought from Autovaux / Camskill / Ebay etc for just over £100 a set thumbsup

Edit to add: Don't do just back, do front AND back otherwise you will mess with the front/rear balance and probably confuse your ABS

Mintex 1155's or EBC Yellow Stuff. Steer well clear of Green Shite.

I've been looking for pads too. Trying to find the cheapest place for the Mintex?
My local garage can fit Ferodo pads but I'm not sure if they are any good on a VX?!?!?!

Everywhere I look I see standard Mintex pads for really cheap (i.e. not 1144, 1155 etc.) Are they any good?

1144's and 1155's are very good. I started with 1144's, then went to 1155's and have now settled on Pagid RS4-2's but I do a lot of trackdays. 1155's are plenty good enough for the road and the occasional trackday and should be available for just over £100. Yellow Stuff are getting good reviews with the Elise boys and are fractionally cheaper than the Mintex offerings. Well worth replacing the brake fluid at the same time unless it's already been replaced in the last 6 months.

I would go for 1144's or yellow stuff unless you are going to do any track driving.

Go for 1144's if you like cleaning brake dust from your wheels :) Yes they are good but they do squeal and groan like an HGV intermittently. I'll be going for Yellowstuff next time thumbsup

VXT ABS is only 2 channel so it makes no difference in that respect.

So Yellow Stuff are good, but not if you want to do trackdays? I was thinking 1155's and slotted rotors (to control the squealing). I want it to be fine on the road, but also be able to do a handful of track days a year. If I get really serious about track days then I will get specific track pads of course.

I think the Yellow Stuff's are more than up to a handfull of trackdays a year, judging by reports and their specs. Ultimately, I guess they're not as good as Pagid RS42/RS14/RS15 but then they are half the price.

Cheers, yeah Pagids have always been too rich for my blood.

I'll look into Yellow Stuff's and boggo rotors! thumbsup

I read that the Greenstuff materials have changed over the years.

When I had them they were already about 3 years old and still had plenty of pad material left, the disks were wearing nicely though.

OK thanks for quick replies! I'll steer clear of 'Green-Shite!' A couple more questions: Are the cheap Mintos OK for normal road driving? Are the dearer 1144/1155 a lot better? Am I best off with Mintos or Yellowstuff? Which will last longer - Mintos or Yellowstuff? Finally, do I need to change front and rear? Thanks again! P.S. I wasn't sure whether or not to p/ex my passat diesel - I'm so glad I did. I can't sleep at night thinking about a new day of driving!

I ran yellow stuff for a year on and off track, I wasn't impressed by them, best thing I could say about them is that they did not fade at all. They felt like blocks of wood, leave heavy deposits on the disk that only clean up with heavy stops, and lack overall stopping power. Also I found they were very poor when cold, almost caught me out a few times. I wouldn't use them again. 1144's were great on the road for me, but next to useless on track. I would prob buy them again if I were not going on track. I'm on Pagid RS14 now which are great, I dont find them lacking when cold although 1st press is not as good as subsequent presses it's still better than the above, but obviously you pay a large premium. I would always change all pads. Don't know which will last longer as both 1144's and YellowStuff had plenty of meat on them when I changed them. I would use the 1144's over YellowStuff for the road. No Idea what the cheap Mintex are like. Also might be worth putting new disks on depending on the condition of yours, they can make a big difference and are very cheap for the VX.

I had 1144's all round on my car for a year based on recomendations here but was really quite disapointed and had some really hairy over the top ABS moments. Have since changed to 1155's and find the brakes much much better and touch wood have not had any brown trouser moments with the crap ABS set up. I think I got them from Camskill and there was some special deal if you got them with discs at the same time which I needed anyway.
