I have removed the steering wheel and am trying to remove the hub. How is this done? I read somewhere this can be done without any special tools. I haveremoved the 22mm nut that secures the hub in place. An OMP wheel + Corsa B hub is ready once I get this done!

You will have to disconnect it from the ball joints to completely swap the hub. 19mm spanner and a fork splitter will do the job. Be aware that the splitter can rip the BJ boots, so you may need to replace them. You dont need to remove the steering toe link as it attaches to the steering arm not the hub. The top hub carrier bolts will also need removing.

I thought the original question related to the bits inside the passenger cabin rather than those at the other end but perhaps I'm not understanding the technicalities

I'll take some pics of wat I mean. A special tool, KM-210-B, is listed here.. I spoke to the local Opel garage to see if they had this, but he told me they usually tapped it out....!?

Apologies for the confusion, I thought you meant wheel hub not steering boss.

Solved! After removing the 22mm locking nut, I bolted the wheel back on to the hub/boss. Came off after a good pull. I'm happy again chinky chinky

After searching I came across this thread. I am also trying to remove the steering wheel boss (so that I can change the airbag squib) however the boss will not budge. I've tried to re-attach the steering wheel and pull like toreide did, but still wont budge :( Does anyone have any suggestions? Cheers.

Hi, When I did mine, I did the same as your doing, with two off us pulling and it wouldn't come off, in the end I put the securing nut back on, not tight just at the start of the thread (to stop the steering pulling off in my face), then with a bit of wood inbetween hit the securing nut hit a few times and then the hub just pulled off. Plus more importantly went back absolutely fine.
does help if you wiggle the steering wheel when pulling too.

Hope you get it off

Cheers for the help guys. My wheel actually came off whilst I was manoeuvering out of my car parking space at work Posted Image. Much to the delight of the people I was in front of!

Had to get a lift all the way home to pick up the hub nut and washer that I forgot to put back on, along with the tools and 7/8 spanner to put it back on.

Lifting this thread, I've had a hard time removing the steering wheel boss and finally have found the solution. It felt like I would warp the steering wheel before the boss would come off the last time I did this. Hitting the nut as suggested in this thread is a BAD idea, this might shear the plastic internal parts of the collapsible steering column.

This tool is what you want, BEFORE you try to remove the steering wheel boss. It's made for the task and fits perfectly!

I'd always use a puller on a steering wheel from the off. Sweated enough times hanging off one to then have to go and get the puller anyways haha

Weirdly I have just done this today and got stuck. I ended up with some invention I knocked up, which was basically putting the steering wheel back on with long bolts and a bar over the middle bolt and slowly drew it off the shaft until it went with a bang. Is the squib knackered if it rotates too much? I was just checking out what sort of job it was before I bought a new squib but the current one rotates about three turns each way and tightens up, if it was knackered would it turn indefinately?

There are instructions on how to reset the contact unit written on the casing. Turn it fully counter-clockwise and then 2.5 turns back until the arrows align. If the contact unit still "tightens" both ways it will be ok, unless you have the airbag light lit? You can open the casing by carefully undoing the plastic tabs. Be careful when you take the cover off so the cable doesn't unfold. Once the cover is off it will be obvious if it's broken or not.

Well it does tighten both ways, then I reset it witht the 2.5 turns rule. Do I need to get the light reset or will it go off automatically when a working squib is used.

The airbag light will never go off by itself, not even when the battery is disconnected. You need either an OPCOM OBD2-reader or go to a dealer and ask them to do it.
