Standard Wheel/tyre Weight?

Whilst changing my engine mount today, I noticed how fcuking heavy the rear wheels are! This has got me seriously considering a change of wheels (most likely TD 1.2s). How much do standard wheels weigh as opposed to TDs? Is it worth the cost for the weight reduction acheived? Cheers

it always will be, unsprung weight effects the handling lots. With my trackday car, I changed from the standard gti wheels to BBS Solitudes (again standard fit but only on special models) and they weighed a lot less and made a big difference to initial turn in

I know that it will improve the performance all round but I what mean is, is the £900 odd that it will cost me justifiable over other things that could be done to the car for the same money.

If you're planning on keeping the car for any length of time then probably yes. Along with the unsprung weight savings, it opens up a whole world of different (and usually cheaper) tyre options before even getting on to the delights of semi-slicks.

Various Wheel Weight Thread

The performance gain achieved by reducing the wheel mass can be quantified using a factor of six. This means that to achieve the same performance gain by reducing the body mass, it is necessary to remove six times the wheel weight saving.


Example A saving of 2Kg Per Wheel x 4 Wheels = Removing 48 Kg from the Bodywork.

What do you normally use your car for? Track or road?

Thanks for the info mate. The car is mainly used for fast road use with the insentive to do trackdays at one point in the near future.

wow didnt realise it worked like that ^^^ has to be worth it then imo. Plus im not keen on either NA or Turbo wheels

how would/does it work?

I think it just means in purely handling terms, you would need to save 48kg from the main body of the car (sprung mass) to get the equivalent effect of saving 8k on the unsprung mass. Obviously that wouldn't increase acceleration or braking ability by the same degree.
