Just looking at the Coutenaysport websoite and they are advertising the supercharger mod officially !

Super charger conversion
Whilst the VX220 2.2 is a fantastic car many people have requested more power and torque, hence the VX turbo, however for many the cost of trading their 2.2 VX in for the turbo model is a huge jump. To fill this gap and make the most of the 2.2's potential we have a supercharger conversion. The super charger lends itself well to this engine, (there is a supercharged version of this power plant used as standard in the United States) In the VX it makes more sense as the super charger does not develop the same radiant heat problems asssociated with the turbo charger. The super charger used is a Lysholm twin screw unit, this type of super charger was selected as it gives a steady supply of boost pressure right across the rev range, which in turn produces a very usefull flat torque curve.
The conversion involves removing the rear clam shell, removing the cylinder head to lower the compression ratio, the con rods are replaced with modified units to provide the underside of the piston with oil spray for increased cooling. Once this work is done the engine is rebuilt with new gaskets and seals, the inlet manifild is reworked to provide locations for the 2 extra injectors and for the fittings for the super charger unit. With the supercharger in place the ancillary drive belt and pulley system is installed. To provide and control the extra power a second engine managment ecu is installed to optimise both the timing and fuelling, whilst all the original tech 2 diagnostic capabilties and not altered. The rear clam shell is then refitted with no need for any body modifications.

The result is 200 bhp and 199 lbft of torque, however this was achieved in Switzerland on a standard exhaust system, air box and 95 octane fuel. This was to keep within the Swiss Opel chassis homologation. Cars in the uk with a free flowing exhaust and 98 octane fuel can expect to see 220+ bhp.
The conversion is fully homoligated to Euro 3 and costs £5500 fitted.

I guess that article in Total Vauxhall mag was a kind of press release for the launch of this product.

That been on the site for a while now, it seems a little expensive to be a cheaper idea than the turbo.

It's been available for about 4 months now. I think they have had 1 installation (member here on the forum) but I'm hoping for a price reduction ;) £5500 is a little out of budget at the moment plus I'd like to hear some feedback on how it performs and what the final bhp / driving characteristics are like.

Even more so when you think that you can get 190bhp for 2k.

Sorry hit the wrong key, it SHOULD read more like - you can get close to 180 with 2k.

Sounds a bit optimistic to me. AmD charge £1350+VAT for their Stage 2 which will give about 170 or so. Starts getting really expensive above that, whatever the option. Once turbos get cheaper 2nd hand, I don't think people will be modding for the lower cost element as it won't be hugely significant. It will be more for the feel they want in their car (I was keen to stay normally aspirated and am very pleased that I did) Paul

Just spoke to AMD and £1350 for the stage 2 N/A (milltek / remap / viper) will get you about 167Bhp so where is the rest coming from for £650?

Just wondering, also how much is the scared stiff setup likely to cost, anyone?

The Courtenay web site shows they are charging £2000 for +35bhp I think. Maybe its 30bhp. Either way it still makes £5.5k seem a little high.

ah here it is - CS4 Airbox Mods, Sports Air Filter, Stainless Steel Exhaust (Tailbox and Centre Section including Sports Cat), Uprated Camshafts and Remap. +30bhp £2200. So yeah, not quite 180bhp but they claim more with a Viper I think.

I posted this the other day but got very little response. GM are developing for release at the end of the year an aftermarket supercharger kit for the 2.2l Ecotec engine. It is intended for the US market, but see no reason why it wouldn't be available to buy and import. I doubt that that will be any where near £5.5k. Other supercharger kits in teh US are about $4k, which would equate to nearer £2.5k. Still pricey, but getting to be a more cost effective upgrade. Waiting for more info from GM.

Yeah, but that kit only offers 170 bhp and may not fit the VX. The engine bay is really tight on the induction side (I know, I've been measuring)

prob is, with the 5000 (still too much) you get a WALLOP

prob is, with the 5000pounds (still too much) you get a WALLOP of instant-torque at any revs, and a level of unstressed-power that can be chosen between 210 and 250 modding the pulley and the software.....such any-revs usable performance is nowhere match for any of the other usual routes like cams, t-bodies, remaps and such........
I would seriously think of visiting Delta this summer, pick up your kit (tax-free), and have it installed....will let you know how my mechanic do with it.... ;)

To be fair I don't just think they fit it, they do some other engine work as well. With good fuel and tuning they should make about 225bhp.

Looks like they are starting to push it now... assume at £5.5K there has been limited uptake....this has now appeared on pistonheads - http://www.pistonhea...sp?storyId=8255

Good stats though especially with all the torque available so low down the range.

I wonder if Courtenay offer interest free credit ;)
