Hi I'm a newbie to the site having recently rebuilt a 2002 2.2 NA, which has only covered 23K miles. I have now started having a problem with the radiator fan which run continuously as soon as the engine is started. I have interogated the EM (engine management) system using my lap top with OP Comm software, this shows the system activated at all time, The engine is running below the fans cut in value of 95 degree C and the temperature gauge appers to be functioning correctly showing 70+ degrees at start up rising to a normal running temp. of 92 degrees, which would suggest that the temp. sensor mounted in the engine is OK. I can start and stop (activate/deactivate) the fan in the Op Comm funtional test menu with the ignition switched on or car running, but the fan starts up from the stopped position and shows activated as soon as I return to the normal menu and unplug the laptop. Can anyone tell me whether the fan is operated from the engine management system by the engine temp. sensor or is there another thermal switch mounted in the radiator as per most other vehicle. I have not had the front clam off todate and do not want to remove it, if not required. I have a part catologue and workshop manual but cannot find any reference to a radiator thermal switch and therefore think that the problem is either the 2 wire temp. switch or the software program in the EM. Does anyone know how to test the switch and whether it has dual functionionality as both a sensor and switch, one core resistive element and the other switching, return circuits via earth. Thank for any assistance. Mike : chinky chinky

Fan running constant => ECU fault code. Read the code(s) and reset the ECU with your Opcom... (On an NA the fan is switched on at 106°C...)

Afaid not . no fault codes shown and no EM light illuminated, OP Com working perfectly, and shows fan in activated mode. As previously stated fan can be stopped and started from Op Com in functional tests mode, therefore relay and wiring OK.

Thanks for the responce anyway'

fan relay controlled by the ECU First place I would look is th EGR valve, if that's faulty it can make the fan come on

These faults will not show an EML but still trigger the fan. Try resetting the ECU.
