Where is a good place to buy a crash helmet for general track day use? Or is it cheaper in the long run to hire one each time?? I suppose we need a full face for the VX as it won't always have the hardtop ..... thanks

You don't need a full face even with the roof off in the vx. But you may want a passenger ride in a screenless car in which case a full face is essential.
So full face probably best.
Whilst many track day organisations said they were going to tighten the rules to only allow some approved helmets (SNELL2005 for example), the truth is that none have. Therefore you can spend as little as 30quid on a bike helmet. I decided on the one bellow (arai sk5)which is more like £315 but it is a proper car helmet without the nomex (arai gp5) lining (use it mainly for karting) but it is a very comfortable trackday helmet that i can wear all day long.

Try a few though, some people have sparco heads, other get on well with stilo, i find arai most comfortable.

Roof helmets, mmmmmm. I have 2 and they are really comfy. Best thing is to try a few on and see which ones fit. No point in getting an all singing fancy helmet if it cuts off the blood flow your your brain!! :P

The Autosport Show is on at the NEC soon (14-17 Jan) and there are usually good deals on helmets on some of the stands (Demon Tweeks, GPR etc)

Some track day companys have relaxed the rules on SNELL 2005 but some tracks have not. I know that Silverstone still require it and as its local to me, it is more often than not that I will do a few days there. Hence I went down the SNELL approved route. GRP have a SNELL 2005 helmet for not much money. The other option is the V2 helmet which are due in stock shortly. Best thing is to get along to some where like GRP and try some on. Also worth looking into which tracks still require a SNELL approved helmet. I wouldn't recommend an open face as I know someone had an off backwards into a barrier and was hit in the face by the stero. Good job that he had a full face that day.

A mate of mine (Nick Algar, 2009 British Sprint Champion) will have a stand for his company (number 8711, Plays Kool Motorsport) at the Autosport Show and will be selling Snell 2005 helmets for around the £150 mark, same quality as the V2 helmets used by many people for trackdays and motorsport but unlike the V2 he should actually have plenty of these helmets in stock thumbsup

The V2's wont be here until mid Feb, but there rogue racing sent me info on two snell helmets they have - They said - We do have in stock the Duchini Kart helmet at £99+ Vat 2205 Snell or we are now looking at the new Headtec helmet legal for NationalMSA , international FIA and Car Track days and again Snell 2005. This retails at £109 + VAT. If you can wait until Feb/Mar Duchini also have a similar looking helmet to the V2 coming on the market. I have pictures of the Duchini and it looks fine and very good value. Martin s
