you don't need new gear cables for the M32 conversion, the originals work perfectly fine you just need to loosen the end, turn it slightly and retighten it thumbsup

But great news I don't have to get them for the box swap, there's enough bits to buy as it is

Whats the weight difference between the two boxes? Is there any room for lightening ie could you machine off the rough casting marks on the sides of the gears to both smooth off to remove crack potential and lighten?

I think this is the 2.0l JTS gearbox 5spd , Top gear ratio 0.95, Final drive ratio 3.73

looks very similar to a 5 speed F23 as used on the Z20LET with the starter on the inlet side (rear)
		   2.0 JTS /	3.2 V6 24v / 1.9 Diesel Mjet
No of Cylinders 4 6 4
Bore/Stroke (mm)	83/91 93/78 82/90
Capacity (cc) 1970 3179 1910
Compression Ratio	11.5/1 10/1 18/1
Peak Torque (Nm)	206 289 305
Gear Ratios:
1st 3.909:1 3.5:1 3.8:1
2nd 2.238:1 2.235:1 2.235:1
3rd 1.520:1 1.520:1 1.360:1
4th 1.156:1 1.161:1 0.971:1
5th 0.946:1 0.971:1 0.763:1
6th 0.818:1 0.614:1

F28's are twatting expensive, hard to get parts for (read impossible in some aspects), weigh as much as a VX and arent actually that strong  So all in, I'd avoid.

Excelent post and pics, is interesting to see how an F23 works internally. I wonder if anyone has had a straight cut set of gears made for the F23...

Not seen any F23 straight cut gear kits but will prob be a way round it. Not sure if F20 would fit in vxt but that would open up loads of gear kit options.

an F20 Straight cut gearset would die on its arse with even a stage 1 terbow setup...... infact a regular helical set would be on its knees fast too. not to mention the F20 was NEVER cable shift, although converting to that cant really be that hard. Unfortunately with large torque, helical gears are the 'best' option, although if you can get the straight cuts wide enough you can get some of the torque handling back, but still lose power, so might aswell stay helical.

Straight cut gears whine more than the missus. Not for everyday use if you ask me. I'd take the helical everytime.

Cable shift could be sorted with a different turret. Not sure what/if Quaife rate their gear kits up to but that's always a difficult thing as lots of variables.

Seen a few rally cars running f20 with decent power although most of these were dog boxes.

Gearbox stuff always tricky & costly though that I do know.

Cheers

P.S. Don't mind the whining from these boxes but agree not for everyday car.
