Ever since i changed my heater matrix i have been getting higher temperatures reaching 104C rather that 89-92C which i got before i changed the matrix. Since the main radiator was changed last year i kept the original coolant that i drained and put it back in and made sure that i have fully bled the system, but it is still too high when stationary or booting it. I contacted AutoVaux as i thought my thermostat may not be opening properly and decided to go for the 82C one instead. I was told that the 82C thermostat is only for the turbo and not for the 2.2. is this true? if not does anyone know where i can get one from?

No 82C is the cool running thermostat used in the 2.2, Courtenays and AutoVaux sell them

Suprised at that, I've gone from an 82 stat to standard and autovaux couldn't get one - they only had 82 stats! Their suppliers had brought in only the 82s, so when they were selling standards they were the wrong one. Sounds too late, but I've got the 82 out of mine here, few months old and up for grabs.

I have had the cool running thermostat from Courtenays in, and it changes running temp in mine from 89 down to 87, and the fans come in earlier at 102 instead of 106. Martin s

hmmmm the fan change CANT be influenced by the stat.... either youve not noticed the fans are on till its cooled or Coutenays have managed to do the only bit of remapping I want by changing the fan switch on temp :)

imho for the running temp to go up so high after playing with the matrix, youve done something wrong (partly keeping the shitty old fluid)
also I dont think 'cool running stats' do much/anything anyway as if you are getting the engine hot, you are getting the engine hot. Simple as that.

Morning, quick question seeing as we're talking about stats.
The Plot :P
===========
- Previous owner had put in a 84deg stat (a year or so ago) temp's have been running at around 90-91deg pretty solid since november when I bought it.
- I've serviced (its an 2000 NA all standard apart from VSE) well DuncanVXR did it tbh. I also needed to replace a seal in the thermostat housing (was leaking a bit of coolant). Lost a bit of coolant whilst replacing the seal, so I topped it up with some coolant...looked fairly thick in concentration (not 100% certain now it was ready-mixed) added just under a litre.

Now
===
- past 10days (everyday car) car is now consistently running at 95-96deg (instead of 90-91).
- Any ideas why this could be?

- have bled the coolant system from both the engine and the front (radiator), temp is still where it is. I know its nothing to be too worried about, but i'm just a little concerned its running 95-96, and car is up to 90 degrees, in half the time (used to take around 10mins in mornings, now its upto temp in 5).

Bonus
=====
- Heater is hotter!! :jump: (and mine was pretty hot before thanks to the previous owner) the other half actually said "wow, its warm in here today!"...i chuckled and said, that's something to write on the forum! I've read hotter operating temps means better heating, although Duncan was messing around with the heating, so it could be cus of that also that its hotter.

main question (lol)
- Possible causes for running at 95-96 instead of 90-91
- Could my thermostat (84deg one) all of a sudden stop/jam/stick and is now opening later/not opening?

Thanks, apologies for rambling. hope i haven't sent u guys to :sleepy:

Changing the stat is only treating the symptom not the cause, my guess is you have an airlock somewhere. I had the same issue last year after having the coolant changed though not as extreme.. The way I cleared it was to "burp" the cooling system by opening the expansion cap when the engine was hot and running. Be extremely careful when doing this and don't do it if your not confident. Ps if your engine isn't modified then going for the 82 deg stat is pointless and there is a possibility of over cooling the oil and damaging your engine Pps I don't accept any responsibilty for injuries caused by the above operation and makeure you use the appropriate protection

i ordered a new stat and put the old and new one together in a hot pan and watched them slowly open up fully at boiling point. both opened at the same time around 83 deg and closed OK, so the stat obviously was not the problem. i got some coolant from vauxhall (3 x 1l bottles cost £10.34), but i am going to get some more as the mix looks weak as i flushed the system with fresh water from a hose pipe so the engine would have been full of fresh water only. when i put the new stat in last night and filled the system back up the engine got hot but the heater and rad pipes were cold as i was getting no circulation. I opened up the bled valve and got pressure in to the header tank by putting my mouth over where the pressure cap normally goes and blew hard (I don't recommend this as coolant is probably bad for you health and does not taste good) and could hear air escaping. once this had stopped pipes were getting warmer but not great so i put the cap back on and used the burp method. once i was reasonably happy that most of the air was out i took it out for a spin and saw the temp drop to 74 deg then around 90,then down again and then it rose back up to just over 100. i got home and burped the system again and i hope that i have got most of the air out now but as it was raining heavily tonight i have not checked again, but will tomorrow. If all OK then i know it was down to the coolant being the problem as the rad was replaced just over a year ago and the heater matrix this month which is when the problems started to happen, so it may be down to re using the same coolant? will update tomorrow.

i now have the correct amount of coolant and have put in the 82c thermostat. but now when going less than 70MPH the temperature is around 91 - 95 and if i go over 3000RPM 75 - 80MPH the temperature goes down to 65-70 and you can feel cold air in the cabin so i know the reading is correct. one thing i did notice when i put the old thermostat and new one in a boiling pan was that they opened around the same time, but the new one closed later. the other thing i noticed was that i could push the spring in with my finger and was unable to on the old one. Do i have a faulty thermostat? i dont thing i have any air locks as the radiator also get hot and have bled it loads of times. Any ideas?
