Anyone had one of the 80's elans? Just looking for an opinion of what its like to live with. Looking to get something easy going and non-MX5 for the missus. MGF is a contender at the price they are! Its almost a disposable soft top run-around. Personally I prefer the lotus though.

Correct techie, I've had one for the last 20 years, nuff said really. Biassed I know but the car is great. It's very comfortable to drive, plenty of boot space for going on holiday. We've toured all over Europe in it. It still looks pretty contemporary imo, the pop up lights giving it away. Tbh I have taken it on track loads of time but it isn't as rewarding as the VX in that respect. Good examples can be found for around £3k if you're prepared to look around. Visit Lotus Elan Central there's one on there for 2.5k. In fact that website is a mine of info for anything to do with the car. If you find one you likethe look of there will be someone close by I'm sure who will give it the once over for you. If you want any more info then let me know

The old man has had one for 20 years too!! Its a bit of a love/hate thing tbh. It looks freakin beautiful, handles pretty well but the parts are becoming pretty scarce and ultimately its front wheel drive and as such, on the limit its not nearly as much fun as a VX. A zillion times more comfortable/practicle though!!! Had a few annoying electrical issues with it that get boring and difficult to sort

Had two myself. Really great practical cars with plenty of go. As previously stated, go to lotuselancentral for more information and advice than you can shake a stick at...

Thanks guys. Really appreciated. Just wanted something soft top and nice looking for the missus. Seen a damaged one on fleabay for 1250 that needs a steering wheel and column.
