Hi,

Trying to track down a knocking sound which seems to come from the back left area of the car. When poking around I noticed the exhaust has some up/down movement. I've attached 2 pics of what it looks like.
It doesn't feel like it's hanging "loose", sort of more slides solidly up and down rather than dangles there (gawd these things are hard to describe!)

Anyone with a Milltek know what sort of movement is ok to expect?

I've attached 2 pics with it at it's most extreme up and down positions.

My old Milltek was rock solid and didn't move at all.

Any up down movement implies that one of the clamps on the overlap pipe joints is loose - don't know about milltek, but my Larini has 2 band clamps either end of the silencer, and I'd recommend looking in a similar place for the milltek.

No movement at all on My Larini or the standard one before that......

You've never seen movement until you've seen Joe's 2bular system. Doesn't feel like it's connected to the car in any way.

Seen a few miltek's with excessive movement and tends to be the join on the U bend area - new decent clamp fixes it but also check the condition of the back box rubber mounts I have uprated rear top mounts on mine and once all bolted in only small movement - normal for engine movement. My 2Bluar is rock solid can just about move it! All about the fitting - I hate exhausts on the vx - either straight forward or a royal PITA and if the tail pipes are out it will just wind you up lol Make sure you give it a wiggle to let the exhaust settle to its normal position before putting trays back on DG

You sure its the exhaust and not the tie rod ball joint knocking?

Have you checked the bracket hasn't roted and Brock of
Mine did . You can see from under wheel arch.
I got a bit of flat metal and had it welded to a round clamp ( work,s fine NOW )hardly any movement

I dont know if your mesh has always looked like that but looks like the exhaust has bounced up at some point and given it a bash so id say theres to much movement. See if you can see where its pivoting when you move it

fitted a milltek a few weeks ago on my car and theres no movement on it at all. i agree that the u bend can cause this but that would cause a straight up/down movement. from what i can see of your picture the trailpipes look to be moving left/right when you move it up and down. that looks to me like one of the side brackets has failed. it wouldnt surprise me as they use ild steel nuts on the studs and they rust away to nothing in short order. its well worth popping the undertray off and having a proper look. if its the u bend clamp then any clamp from a car shop/exhaust fitting centre will do the job to fix it but if the studs holding the bracket on have failed then its an exhaust off job and a lot of head scratching to replace them! may be worth a call to milltek in that case to see whether they can help out putting some new studs on. if the bracket has failed let me know as i have a spare in the garage you can have for beer money. cheers rich

mine was the hanger that's bolted to the top of the three bolt flange between the cat section and the u-bend - they have a habit of disintegrating

I had exactly the same. Removing the undertray showed that the clamping bolt connecting the pipe into the box on the nearside had come loose. New bolt and tightened up, problem solved.

Looks and sounds like the clamp on joint from the U bend to the Back box is loose.

Well, looking at my old car I can say that it is definitely the exhaust come loose: The mesh was not bent and the little plastic fillet was on it when I cleaned it a few days before you viewed it. Now the fillet is not there and the mesh is bent so something has worn loose for definite. I'm sorry she is being very naughty to you since the day of sale

Noticed the mesh is all buggered, I removed the plastic fillet bit the other night to see if it was that making the racquet as it was pretty loose, but no go, so def seems it's the exhaust.

Yeah it's being a right cheeky git! At the moment it's been at the garage almost as long as I've owned it

All is forgiven now, it's made up for its recent fits after the trackday on Sunday at Cadwell Park
Had a really great and can't wait to do it again.

Also after a fair bit of driving it there's no hint of sludge so it seems the oil cooler was the culprit.

This thread has been a great help to me - I noticed that my exhaust moved, I whipped the under tray off, found that the clip on the NS wasn't as tight as it should of been, nipped it up and voila! one non moving exhaust. Cheers all.
