All in all it stank so I called Trading Standards to let them know and hopefully save some other poor sod giving this cowboy their hard earned and they didn't want to know, as I'd not bought the car no offence had been committed, 'but what about advertising it with 50k and its done nearly 170k...' surely thats worth a look in case he's got a plot full of similar clocked cars I asked... but nope!
Back in 1991 I was after a Cavalier GSi, I'd missed out on a high mileage one at the local car auction, but a week or so later a private ad appeared in the local paper for one with a lower mileage, so I went along to have a look. It was the same car! With half the mileage & pages replaced in the service book (undone the staples). Again trading standards weren't interested & just logged the call. Around the same time the Ausin Rover dealership that I worked at were fined £5k for selling a Mini Cooper as new when it had over 400 miles

Thats wrong.
Its an offence to misrepresent a car whether its sold or not, they should be investigating this dealer.
I would be calling back and asking to speak to someone who knows what their job should be.

Yeah I know the trading standards office in Devon would be along promptly to speak to the seller

I would call your local paper and tell them trading standards weren't interested in protecting their readers
