Been looking for a shed, See one advertised on Autotrader that looks good, 50k only 2 previous 'lady' owners, mint condition ect ect and keenly priced to sell from a 'small' trader. Give him a call and he confirms all the advert says and that its still for sale. Run an HPI check on the car before going to see it and it comes back as 4 owners, Milage at last MOT Aug 2009 168,000 miles, and a CAT D! Call trader and ask him to confirm the milage again and he states now 'its showing as 50k' so I guess he reckons somethings up, when I tell him the HPI data and its a CAT D he swears it can't be and he must have used a 'stock photo' for the advert which is where I took the registration from... Call me back about 10 minutes later and gives me a tale about how it is the same car (what a surprise) and he 'never knew' it was a CAT D and the milage info can't be as high as that as its such a great little driver but without a FSH he now can't be sure... All in all it stank so I called Trading Standards to let them know and hopefully save some other poor sod giving this cowboy their hard earned and they didn't want to know, as I'd not bought the car no offence had been committed, 'but what about advertising it with 50k and its done nearly 170k...' surely thats worth a look in case he's got a plot full of similar clocked cars I asked... but nope! rant

Back in 1991 I was after a Cavalier GSi, I'd missed out on a high mileage one at the local car auction, but a week or so later a private ad appeared in the local paper for one with a lower mileage, so I went along to have a look. It was the same car! With half the mileage & pages replaced in the service book (undone the staples). Again trading standards weren't interested & just logged the call. Around the same time the Ausin Rover dealership that I worked at were fined £5k for selling a Mini Cooper as new when it had over 400 miles :o on the clock at the time of it's first registration

Thats wrong.

Its an offence to misrepresent a car whether its sold or not, they should be investigating this dealer.

I would be calling back and asking to speak to someone who knows what their job should be.

Yeah I know the trading standards office in Devon would be along promptly to speak to the seller
I would call your local paper and tell them trading standards weren't interested in protecting their readers

Private sellers = trading standards will not want to know, buyer beware Dealers/traders = they have to comply with the sale of goods act, trade descriptions, and the buyers statutory rights Trading standards should be visiting this dealer after info like that passed to them. And to add to this discussion, dealers can be fined for advertising without declaring they are dealers.
