Right the VX has started smoking once up to around 95 degrees now and then, obviously turbo oil seals on there way out. My question is does this really matter as im going to the ring in 5 weeks or so. Thinking i'll just leave it until I return to replace the turbo . . . . or is this a bad idea and need to get working to replace before (VXR Turbo). What do you think. Sam

Burning oil for long periods is obviously not very good for the engine. First port of call though is to try a thicker oil (10w50) and see if that sorts it out or atleast delays it for a while longer. I take it you warm up and cool down correctly too

I think. so bad for the cat long term. will it last the ring tho, or is it slow to get worse ?? unsure. Don't wanna blow it completly and break down??

you may want to take the pipe to you intercooler off to see if theres oil in there as it may be leaking the inlet side aswell. Then that oil would be going through your engune. 5 weeks is plenty of time to get a second hand Let turbo or a vxr unit on though ;)

Bear in mind that the problem could be coming from 1 or more failing valve stem seals. This is a moderately common problem with the Z20LET. The way to check is to take the exhaust manifold off. If you have oil deposits on any of the runners then you know its the stem seals, otherwise the leask is most probably from the turbo seals.

Never have to top up the oil, still showing max on dipstick and its due a 12 month service now. Nev thanks for you advice, if it were valve stems wouldn't it smoke all of the time? How easy are they to change? What are the runners? Thanks

This might sound like a daft question Sam, but are you sure it's oil burning off, and not trapped water boiling off the engine? What colour is the smoke?

Another one Sam if you aren't losing a lot of oil.

The silicone breather hose pictured here

As it is very close to the manifold it gets hot and perished quite easily, as you can see my was quite bad.
It was leaking oil, and although i had no smoke there have been reports of the oil dripping onto the manifold and burning off. Think it was Nev actually.

Well think that has covered the checks required ;) 5 weeks I would get it sorted tbh Also the oil return pipe from turbo to sump is prone to leaking but would not give you smoke When you say smoking from turbo area or out the exhaust? Now and again - how reg? Depending on the answers should give you a better idea on what to do ;) DG

I'm getting smoke from the exhaust on tick over when the oils quit hot, also really smells of burning oil. Seen this three times now after a blast is quit a lot of smoke, clear to see.

Worth checking the part Tim highlighted still ;) Time to take the intake pipe to turbo off and heatsheild and have a good look around - you can only see the turbo oil return pipe from under the car, so that would be under tray off You could try one of the oil restricting bolts (reduces pressure) to the turbo but has been discussed and not 100% sure myself based on experiance and some theory :D DG
