During the Le Mans weekend issues with the gearbox stared raising their ugly head. When going into 1st the gears crunch unless I'm completely stopped and ease the stick in very gently  On the move it is often not going into 3rd unless placed very firmly forward and sometimes jumps out of 3rd when the clutch is engaged. Could it be something less serious like cable adjustment/stretch or am I heading towards a expensive gearbox problem?

Sounds like needing cable adjustment or will be more. Selector forks are made of the same cheese lotus use for the bodywork

I'd check the cables first too. If the worst comes to the fore I've a spare box kicking around.

Mine's done that for over a year now. Back on Track had a look and were pretty confident it was a bust selector fork. For me it hasn't got any worse, and it's a good excuse to practice your double-declutching :)

I think you can get metal replacements for the (plastic) selector forks, which are reasonably cheap -- not including the 6+ hours to remove and replace the gearbox, mind...

Hi, Its a common problem with the F23 box, 1st, 2nd & 3rd selection, cables could be in need of adjustment, the selector fork & worn synchros are all common gremlins. With the power of your VX and higher levels of torque (what's the mileage?)the synchros could be the culprit - is there any wining or rumbles form the box on changing up? When on track did it happen when the car was hot, if gear selection becomes difficult on track its cables. Firstly - check on ebay for a F23 secondhand box, if you can find a good one, then its far cheaper to replace the entire box than start stripping looking for stuff. A mechanic that knows his stuff can change a box in 4 hours. Cheers Ian

you don't need the rear clam off for the gearbox, just do the same as if you were changing clutch, drop suspension out.

Never would say anyone is useless, we did it because we had all the equipment, lifts, tools and bodies available and someone who has done this several times. the record for new gearboxes with a turbo in germany is four!!!!!!!!!!! Cheers Ian
