Need to sort heat shielding beneath the boot on my rear clam and never had my grubby mitts on Nimbus products to know how strong it is. Does it have enough structural strength to span the area above the exhaust back box and take the weight transferred from the boot floor? My car currently has fresh air only between the exhaust and boot floor, I removed all the heat shielding years ago when running without a boot and rear vents so did not have to worry about heat transfer. I need to insert a base for the boot floor on my replacement clam to rest on and to strengthen the fibreglass floor. Sheet ally would be ideal but worried that will transfer heat into the clam. Nimbus would be better if it has enough strength to support the boot. Failing that some sort of composite... Nimbus below plywood? It has been years since I removed it, but is the OEM shield composite? I don't plan to refit the exhaust heat shielding or full size wheel arch liners as I want to keep some of the cooling benefits of the mods I've made, but I'd be annoyed if the clam I've spent ages repairing went up in flames the first time I go on track :rolleyes: Will keep my extinguisher on hand just in case :D

I lined the underside of my boot with aluminiumised 3m backed fibreglass - there are some pics in my project thread :) keeps it really cool now thumbsup but I still have the exhaust shield in place although to be honest I think youd be better off looking for a secondhand proper exhaust heat shielding

I have a feeling the Nimbus might lose it's effectiveness and possibly crush if you used it there and used the usual method of attaching the clam to the rear subframe, through it. It's pretty sturdy stuff but it relies on the "pockets" for the insulation. If you could support the boot with bigger spacers where it attaches to the subframe, you might be able to get away with it though.

Joe_589 has replaced his OEM silencer heatshield with Nimbus and that looks like a really well done job. As the Nimbus is so much better at insulation, it might actually be enough to mean you could get away without anything more substantial than the lightweight glassfibre material with a reflective side (like this), on the underside of the boot section.

Ah, that's where it went. No the Nimbus is not at all load bearing and cannot support anything.

Cheers guys, plenty of ideas there for me to knock something up. As you say, probably better to make up a replacement heat shielding for the back box and replace the OEM material on the underside of the clam with something suitable. Seemed like a good idea at the time junking all that stuff when I was getting the car down to sub 840kg, but I guess it was all there for a reason :D

Joe, is the exhaust shield/cover nimbus over an ally sheet? I like what you've done there as I'm not too keen to enclose the exhaust again after modifying the rear arch liners to get better airflow into this area.

I took my car to be MOT'd today after lying idle for the best part of 2 years and the clam was pretty hot around the tailpipes, after a 25 minute drive. Shielding on the inside of clam and a heatshielded panel over the exhaust looks a good compromise between maintaining airflow and shielding the fibreglass from direct heat sources.

PS My car breezed through the MOT, even with rusty brakes, 2 year old petrol and it hasn't been serviced for over 3 years. Got to love these cars :)

Nope, tis not over an alloy sheet, it is supported at the back and sides by the subframe and across the back by an ally bar.
