We're driving to Portugal from Santander (and back again two weeks later) Has anyone any must sees/good places to stop on route. We'll be taking 3/4 days to do it so will need some overnight stops too. Any advice from peeps who know the area would be appriciated. Need to start planning/booking.

Drive down through Spain, staying at a couple of Pardores on the way down. Aim for Seville and then you're only a 90 minute run across into Faro. If you needed a diversion, you could always take in Ronda (might even be something on at Jerez) and you'll be in the tapas central of Andalucia for some proper treats.

Just got back from a Britany Ferrys holiday. Plymouth to Santander, on a five day mini break. Best holiday for a long time the Ferry and the food onboard was excellent, cannot speak highly enough of the standard of service. Splash out and get a commodors cabin, and book a table for evening buffet, both ways, four courses for £22. On the costal route be sure to stop off at San Vincente de la Barquera, for wounderful sea food platers, together with endless numbers of sandy beaches. We stayed inland from Santander, in the Cantabrian mountains, just like a mini Switzerland. Found an exqusite hotel on our travels..The Palacio de Sonanes at Villacarriedo, will certainly be staying there on our next visit. Can also recommend the Casona Llerana (www.casonadellerana.com), about 45 minutes drivesouth from Santander. Dave

A bit of a thread revival. Hoping to drive down to Spain around late-April/May, possibly all the way down to the south. I'll check out the routes others have done as above, but are there any issues with personal security or road conditions to be aware of? chinky chinky
