Help! How Do You Replace The Crankshaft Sensor

I know this has been the subject of a number of posts but after spending ages looking at the engine and searching this site I still don't know where exactly it is and what you need to remove to get access to it. Most of the posts relate to NAs and I know exactly what to do in respect of NA but not for the turbo. Car has been playing up a bit since I got it back from the bodyshop with a new clam and exhaust and at first I thought it might just be something arising from that work. It just occasionally stalled whilst at junctions, but now it stalls whilst driving and won't start. Broke down yesterday 80 miles from home and it took me 6 hours to get back home with the VX on the back of a lorry! RAC guy identified a crankshaft sensor fault and I got one today but not sure how to fit it. Any help/advice will be gratefully received. Mark

Could be a lot of things but if you want to replace that you need to; Remove plug into coil pack Slide the vx220 turbo cover off the plug at the far side of the engine (drivers side) remove (find small screwdriver put in sidewards to release clip easier on sime) not you need to remove the plastic cover on the top side section - 2 torx E8 or E10 then you can remove you can now remove the retaining bolt holdin the camshaft sensor - lift out Worth cleaning it if dirty and refit as it is a hall sensor and this can effect its workings Bit tight but not a long or hard job ;) Do not overlook the connector of doom or earth connections if its not that Good luck DG

thats the camshaft sensor , engine will run without this

crankshaft sensor is much further down and attached to the block.


This is the engine upside down, you can see the trigger wheel on the left next to the oil pump ( cam belt end nearest OSR wheel ) , the crank sensor picks up on this

Thanks guys. I eventually found it and what a pain it is to replace. I first took the diffuser/undertray off thinking I could get at it from there. No luck. Then I took the boot lid off, heat sheild around the turbo, the air duct from the air filter to the turbo and the rear wheel arch liner. With a struggle managed to get the thing off but if you drop anything such as the socket or the bolt you must have a magnet to retrieve it as they will drop into a deep recess where your fingers can't get to. I had to dash off to Halfords to get one half way through the process. Car is now running (fingers crossed) and I hope that it was just the sensor that had packed in. I know I should have gone through the fault finding checking procedure (http://www.speedster...el-Vauxhall.pdf) but I trhought jsut replacing it might be easier. Next time I know what to do. I also note that I have a problem with the auxillary coolant pump relay. Apparently it is an open circuit. My OBD reader does not pick it up but the RAC's one did. I think I have this problem awhile as when I had problems last year with it cutting out (the dreaded blue plug)the Vaux dealer found that fault as well. Anyone had issues with this before? Mark

I will try and upload a pic here for future reference, but to find this, follow the oil dipstick tube down. There is also the problem of the massive bracket which holds the idlers wheel (aircon delete kit). It is a 100% easier job if you have done the underdrive pulley and do the 858 belt.
