Had my Break Pads fitted on saturday. They sound like my car is having an orgasm everytime i break GENTLY. Hard breaking is ok. Is this because they need to be worn in?

Yeah I think so, I fitted some a couple of weeks ago & they were squeeky at first, so I found an empty bit of dual carriageway & hit the brakes hard a couple of time from high speed, now seem ok.

While this is a current thread, I have a question about Green Stuff. I find the standard car brakes are desperate when wet and cold. I know they are fast road, but the braking in wet cold conditions (when it can be hard to impart heat into the pads) and after long motorway drives in the wet can be a little worrying. Does the Green Stuff compound work better when cold and wet, or is it worse :o Thanks in advance for advice. Steve

No, they need to be thrown away.

Not a big fan then Partridge? :D

What are you using? I am interested in the options, since I will need to change mine before too much longer!

No, they need to be thrown away.

Why do you say that?
I have found they are a considerable improvement in terms of feel over the standard pads (only had them fitted a couple of weeks ago).

Haven't really had much chance to drive them in the wet, but they seem ok when cold.

Overall a worthwhile upgrade from standard pads.

I'd recommend them. No problems with fade but do seem a bit noisy - but that's prolly just the grooved discs. sh*t loads less brake dust on the wheels, so worth it for this reason alone. However, would be interested to hear Partridge's take...

had my pads changed to ebc about a month ago, taken the best part of that time for them to settle down. now there's very little squeeking, and now the car feels more solid when braking at high speeds.

but that's prolly just the grooved discs

have you used the ebc discs, looking into getting some at the moment. are they worth the investment, for looks as well as braking? and if you dont mind me asking were they expensive?

cheers

Same for me, no more black alloys. B)

They're good from cold but even better when warmed up a little :D

Disc are groved black daiamonds (more of a rust colour actually) and cost about £130/pr.

Don't think I bedded discs or pads in properly and have never squeaked, they just make an unpleasant grinding noise sometimes - it's bearable.

Don't think you should have drilled discs, but that might depend on the brand...

They need to be bedded in slowly. Mine took 200 miles of "normal" driving ;) You would have been better getting the discs at the same time as the pads  Putting new discs on with old pads isn't a good idea. The first use of the day seems to give a "brown trouser" moment everytime I go out :o But after that they are good firm and consistant thumbsup The noise is always there but sounds "unique"

I've been running mintex pads and they squealed like four piggies to start with but have settled down now. One word for the wise is its worth checking that the brakes are warm before you really need them as i have had a couple of scary moments when they are first cold and wet and not worked as well as i antisipated.

Are you talking to me Easy?

Fitted new groved BD's with new Green Stuff (at the same time)...was then on the track within 150 miles :o ...they work fine.

What would be the symptoms of not bedding in properly?

My view is based on experience. Fitted rears on Wednesday. Did 250 miles around Bedford on Saturday, when I took my helmet off I could hear metal on metal. Green Stuffs all worn away. As for less dust, they had reconstituted themselves all over the alloys. One set pads, four days, 400 miles. Standard rears had lasted 12,000. Fitted fronts, checked them a month or so later. They had turned into 'black stuffs.' Looked like they had been on fire. Friction material carbonised The braking effect was inconsistent and unpredictable. Now have RS14's. Very noisy but much much better. Andrew

cold wet brakes (std or EBC) are useless 1st thing or if youve been on the motorway for a while!! My ebc's squealed for a while - i used rickies bedding in process.... Slow a few times to warm them up.... Then five 80-20mph HARD STOPS asap! You wont be interested in the squealing, the burning is far more worrying :o   The did still squeak at low speeds, but that dissapeared after 500miles
