Hi I have previous had experience of fitting bigger discs to my golf and it worked well. The larger discs used existing callipers and there was a spacer for mounting. Does anyone know what fitment the VX runs? I.e. is it the same as a calibre or vectra? If I knew I have a guy who will engineer spacers and bang, bobs your uncle 308mm discs! much better feel and power especially with groves comp spec. TAT do a version using tarox discs but a little pricey but still cheaper than a £1200 to £1600 4 pot set up. Any ideas? rgds IAN

I have astra gsi 308mm discs on mine, but you need 10mm spacers for the calipers and 10mm longer bolts to hold the caliper to the hub 4 pots are not really required on the vx220, just decent pads like mintex 1144 / 1155 or equivilant

Alcon / AP 295mm (Plans told me they were AP discs but I don't think they are, I think they are Alcon) up front on mine and spacers, RS4-2 Pads all round and braking is great :)

hactually its more than 10mm of spacers ;) Well I had to put more than 10mm of spacer onto mine when I tried the 308's (incidentally the 308's weigh as much as the vx and offered next to shag all difference imho)

Interesting, Plans told me they were AP and they have only 3 grooves. Also no part numbers, when chatting to a friend at AP he said they were not AP as all AP have part numbers on the outer edge and more grooves. I have a new boxed set of AP s in the garage and indeed they are quite different, smaller venting, more grooves and part numbed.

So wouldn't recommend going to 308mm's then just a decent set of discs and pads? Groved only or drilled and groved? cracking a poblem?

Cheers

unless the 'drillings' are cast in the disc then I wouldnt touch a drilled disc with a billion foot long barge pole  depending on what you are doing with the car, the usual brake recipe works... plain pikey £20 a shot std discs and for pads Mintex 1144/1155/ carbon lorane CL5+ or somethings... depends on your budget etc.

The car is running about 250 bhp and on 888's with comps, braided hoses, redstuff but standard discs. I am getting the suspension sorted but brakes are frankly SH1 T on the track, hence want more.

The spacer idea worked for me before and you can get GSI or other 308mm vauxhall performance discs for £80. Some are worried about the spacer format, but elise shop sell them? Any ideas or concerns?

Tyres are your limiting factor on brakes. Search for a post by dw1 on this topic. Its something I researched when I was looking into the charger conversion. It can be an expensive folly..... 1155's and solid discs should be ok.

I have EP spacers so I can run these :-

295mm discs, and no concerns in any way. Fantastic brakes with pagids.

My firstbthough would be just to change pad compounds, and the majority consensus is that EBC pads are not the best on a lightweight car like the VX or Elise!

You've answered your own question. There's so much good stuff on here, why you want to plough your own furrow is a mystery to me. Standard discs - good pads SEOT

:yeahthat: Ferodo DS2500 also good option along with Mintex, both MUCH better than cheap EBC stuff for the necessary mix of high friction from cold for road use / high heat resistance on track / not much brake dust - which means no squealing either.

I have the same setup as you with CL5+ pads and the brakes on track are awesome.
