Trying to source a power only usb cable. I've just bought a Sony car stereo and I had planned to power my navman by using the front usb slot on the stereo. However when I plug the navman in it thinks its being pluged into a PC so tries to make a connection. Thought if there was such a thing as just a power only cable(no data) then the satnav would work?

Your problem is the head unit is a USB host, so will try and talk to any USB devices that get connected to it. You might be able to butcher a USB cable by opening it up and cutting the data comms signal wires in it, just leaving the power but no guarantees that the stereo would be happy with that. I've got a permanent mini-USB 5v power supply fitted inside the dash with the cable popping out at the right most corner of the dash for powering my TomTom/Phone/GPS logger.
If you've got the original cigarette lighter power lead, you could adapt that to be hardwired (make sure you retain the bit that plugs into the lighter as that will likely have a voltage dropper in it). Or alternatively wire something like this in, and connect the complete power cable into it.

Cheers for the info. While mucking about with my HTC desire last night I connected it to my laptop and it would only charge(no data transfer). Then realised that it was the car charger cable that I was using. Tried the same this morning on the stereo and it would only charge the phone with the charger cable. If I used the std cable the stereo would connect fine to the phone. So I recon I could get one of these and use my HTC charger cable.
