we went in August, Empire State building is good - you do have to go through airport style security, horse and carriage around central park, bus trip around downtown, trip in a yellow cab, shopping, cafe's, lots to do in such a short time... what is not so good is the queue for statue of liberty, expect to wait several hours in a long queue and you cannot go inside it unless you book several months in advance

As Vocky said Statue of Lib is very busy. As a result we didn't bother, we were there for new year and the place was packed!! Very cold so wrap up. Felt very safe there, riding the tube at midnight etc. I'm uploading a video as we speak of some locals dancing in the tube station. Will post when it's done. :D

the local people (new yorkers) are very friendly and there are lots of police about so you feel safe walking the streets thumbsup Serendipity is a nice place for some food ps: get a map before you go and figure out where everything is you want to do or you will walk straight past stuff, especially the Empire State building

Another thing you could do is get the ferry to Staten Island, especially because it's free. Not sure what there is to do over there, we just got the ferry over, had some lunch and then came back.

You get a really good view of the city from the ferry though.

Ice skating in central park ! Got told off for doing jumps and going backwards mind  Also some area (genich village) or something similar sounding - where there are loads of cool designer furniture shops. If you like that sort of thing.

What's at the former site of the WTC? Isn't there a memorial of some kind now? Could be a moving place to visit for a few minutes.

When I was there it was still a building site but near where you catch the ferry for the statue of liberty is this huge sculpture of a globe that was on the concourse in between the 2 towers. As you can imagine it took an absolute beating when the towers came down, it's got dents and gouges all over it but they've made it into a memorial with an eternal flame nearby.

Opposite ground zero there was a visitors centre with loads of stuff about the twin towers along with info and a model of its replacement. The plan was for one massive tower called liberty or something like that, not sure if that's still the plan?

Been 2x to NYC. Personally, I'd skip Empire State and go to the "Top of the Rock", observation deck on the rockafeller centre. (Have done both and prefered the views (unobstructed) from the rock). It's a lovely city, I felt safer walking around at night than I did in London.
