I dont really know carb tuning much, have a car that is idling at 2k, its on webers. would this be an easy tune up or is it going to cost hundreds to fix? :)

What webbers are you running ? Is it manual or auto choke ? could be choke sticking on or a worn / frayed throttle cable or could be the carbs just need balancing ( twin carb versions ) chinky chinky

its on 32/34. its a car i am going to go look at, the rest of the car is sorted just wondered if it was a sign of major expence. looking around a new carb set is only 160, if it comes to it. anyone know any good carb tuners/indy vw people around cambridge? so in answer to you actual question, i am not sure about the choke. :)

From the limited experience I have with cars on carbs, high idle/running rich could also be a leak on the intake manaifold side. I found the leak in the gasket on mine by pouring a little oil onto the gasket which temporarily sealed the leak and reduce the idle speed. A new gasket sorted the problem. Might be different on Weber cars, but a simple check before resorting to carb tuners or replacement parts.

thanks for that :) Cliffie will contest that my lady friend is a gem; drives a crap ford KA that has previously been written off- centre of the steering wheel is a different colour, front bumper with scrap yard label, it didnt have an air box, bonnet re aligned etc etc. mk golf seems like a great little run around for a midwife and i wont mind driving it for myself :) i have found a lovely mk2 Golf Driver that is on 90k, new clutch, new brakes, rare alloys, well looked ater and previously a mag featured car- just has a high idle. thanks i will be sure to look up that guy when i pick the car up.

That Pete Baldwin knows nothing about cars, should stick to doing Blue Rinses on old women.

Is that better Stu?

I agree - it's very unlikely to be anything major - probably a vacuum leak or poorly adjusted linkage. If its a single Weber it will be a 32/34 DMTL - a common replacement for the problematic standard Pierburg unit. I fitted one to my old MK2 driver (before I fitted a supercharged G60 engine B) ). If your looking for any advice get yourself over onto the ClubGTI forum. I might still have a rebuild manual at home I can email over if your interested - I cant guarantee I will be able to find it though  .

These guys are good for parts :My link
