I’m not 100% certain my knock is the rack although I’m fairly confident it’s related. Going to check this weekend if my new locking nut key arrives, yes, I’ve lost another (and yes, I am a Muppet). S o what are my options? Looking on the net and on here. Send back to Titan, £55 + parts (normally £30) New one, people have said 130 – 500, all I can find is Elise parts though, 300 ish. Carpartsdirect, they've said 'We have the Steering Rack for your 2003 model in stock at £99.00 All our Steering Racks are exchange items which incur a deposit of £60.00 which is payable unless we receive your old unit back within 14 days' Any other options, seems back to Titan is the way forward?!? Ideally somewhere local for a refurb would be excellent, I could get it off this weekend and back on the weekend after if that was the case. I take it replacing the TRE’s at the same time is worth doing, they are looking a little tired, I guess Elise parts for these!? Cheers.

I sent mine back to Titan like you said cost roughly 100 quid. Just dont expect it to definately cure knocking, there are two bush types apparently they assured me mine was perfectly safe but the knocking remains.

There is a potential problem, there's 2 types of rack. Early ones that can be rebuilt, later ones that cannot. My old and very fubar'd rack is sat here doing nothing. It is the rebuildable type but might be beyond economical repair. Yours if it's any use. It was knocking and felt like a worn skidblock thingy. Probably not that fubar'd but replacement with a new quickrack removed the knocking sound completely. If the shocks are fine then double check the steering column joints are tighter than a tight thing. If there is a little play in the joints it could feel like knocking. Head in the footwell time. I found it easier in the passenger footwell and reaching over to the drivers side whilst simultaneously cramping up, breaking ribs and not breathing for 8+ minutes. One last edit. Eliseparts have a 5-20% off christmas deal at the moment. If you do want to get anything from them now is the time. Or I can use my account and get a little loyalty discount too.

I think I'm going to be in the market for a new rack also. However, as mine is my only mode of transport I can't afford for the car to be off the road for a week to get the rack refurbed at titan.

I plan to have another look this weekend, TRE's etc off and then see what happens when the steering rack arm is moved about, someone posted a vid and their noise sounds very much like mine. These cheapo TRE's sound good. It may just be them for all I know. Once it's all apart I'll be posting a vid and get peoples thoughts. How do I know if I have a new or old rack? Mine is an O3 NA if that makes any difference.

Techieboy posted a picture with a comparison between the two.

Look at the rack from passenger side (maybe take off a wheel and shine a torch in there) and see if the casing is a cast metal in silvery colour or a black tube with (iirc) black coloured mounting too. Silvery = old and rebuildable, black = newer.

If you want it you can have first refusal on my rack to aid with the refurb and fitting turnaround. Otherwise I'll open it up the general community - for a suitable fee.

That would be excellent, like i say, I need to get a new locking nut before I can check.

I guess yours is a Titan but you're buying new?!

Edit, I take it ours are the same as the s1 Elise.

Already got new rack and fitted. Decided to do a full refresh of balljoints, steering quick rack, lightweight steering arms, track rod ends, column universal joints, hub carrier bolts. Old is a Titan so can be refurbed.

Mine is a Titan, went back to Titan and came back still knocking. Under the rubber gator is a bush, from what they told me they cannot (I would say rather not) replace it. This bush controls up/down left/right movement not in/out so while I have zero play in the steering there is a little up/down movement which knocks. As soon as you remove the rack you will see if the bush is slack and ask if Titan will change it.

Reading the information on the SELOC teckwiki and the author of that refurbed the rack themselves. http://wiki.seloc.or...e_steering_rack Do you think this is worth a try or best to just get Titan to refurb? Does anyone know what sort of turnaround time Titan offer for the refurbishment of the rack? TIA

Nitron sell a quick rack. Don't know anything about it, apart from it's quite pricey!!
