Just trying to swap backbox but it seems a tight fit. Can somebody tell me if rear clam has to come off or doe it squeeze through the gap? Any tips would be great and save me a lot of time Cheers

Garage did mine with the clam on and the center undertray off, but the backbox that was being replaced was a lot smaller so could be why.

That's what mine is I just didn't want to start something that shouldn't take too long and end up being a long job. How much did garage charge you out o interest?

Depends what backbox. Milteks are mahoosive so either the rear clam or the cat will need to come off. It's a vx, things are never short or easy!!

The garage custom built mine and shaped it to the car so the cat-back exhaust and fitting cost me £300. Bargain if you ask me.

You have to take the cat/downpipe off to get the OEM box out.

The oem silencer will come out with just the rear under tray off, the bottom of the clam will just flex enough for it to come out chinky chinky

I'm the same.... I start off with the best of intentions, strip half the car apart and then say "Stuff that for a game of soldiers" when I get a stuck bolt.

No need for clam off but it would be easier with the car up in the air and in a warm garage.

Make sure they know what they're doing and they don't damage your car in the process.

Done it several times this year with 3 different size boxes and one was 'huge'. Just take off the under tray (diffuser) and take off the manifold as well. This is necessary sometimes (maybe not if the box is small) to move it back out of the way (you'll need to take the sensor on the left rear of the car out). Just make sure the cars jacked up high as poss and its not too bad. Worst part is usually trying to bolt the diffuser back on! Martin s

The manifold does not need to be removed  It all depends on how the system is pieced together. Generally is goes manifold to cat section to back box. There is a u-bend between cat section and box. Also might be another u-bend section between the box and tail pipes. If the box is large then there might not be enough space between the clam and cat section so will need to remove the cat pipe or just loosen it so that it can swing a little. It also depends if the u-bend and tail pipes are still attached.

As said, you dont always have to remove the manifold, try it first with it on. But two of the exhaust boxes I fitted did need it moving as the rear under fibreglass section was being bent to its limit. I'm no mechanic and would suggest you have a go at this, as garages dont do it much better and charge a lot for what isnt that hard. Martin s

Why would you need to take the manifold off? :beat: Just take the downpipe off the manifold for more clearance. It has three brass nuts on studs so you only need to get at the underside.

:yeahthat:
There is a big difference between manifold and downpipe!
