but the key with the F23 is good oil. Silkolene Syn 5 is sh**. Castrol SMX-S seems to be doing a wonderful job.

Slindy's comment is the only one I ever remember reading about gearbox oil - I think we put the same in mine :)

the M32 6 speed gearbox is quite noisy with the standard thin GM oil, I had to change it to a thicker oil M32 = 2.4 litres F23 = 1.8 litres

I always ran 2.25L in my F23... it rarely breathed heavily either (really really hot days and a hard spanking made it oil a bit once)

I usually just fill the F23 up with two 1 litre bottles, even vauxhall recommend over filling the F23

There's nothing at all wrong with the Syn 5, but sometimes it isn't the right oil for the car. The VX220 needs a GL4 oil, the Syn 5 is a GL4/5, but very slippery, so it doesn't slow the synchros like a GL4 does. For diffs and some gearboxes, it's ideal.

Redline MTL (standard cars) and MT90 (modified, driven hard) would be my choice for a VX220.

How often should gearbox oil be changed on a VXT please? Does gearbox oil get lost/used up in these gearboxes? (sorry if that's a stupid question - gearbox oil seemed to last forever in the MX5)

Lasts forever in these cars unless you're tracking the car and it's spewing a little out of the gearbox breather. If you have a modified breather it won't lose any (unless you have a leak somewhere). We changed mine in July last year and the stuff that came out looked perfect. Not sure whether that was the original fluid or not but, it was the first time it was changed during my ownership.

 I thought Oilman had recommended one, Redline MT90 (as your's is likely to be driven a little hard)? As to why it's any good, dunno. I just refilled mine with GM's finest.

It's a top end ester based oil that is good enough quality for any kind of use.
