calling all xbox 360 live users, does anyone here have it runing on a bt broadband or sky broadband or similar connection.. i.e. the 'upto8mb' ones? i currently run mine on a virgin 20mb line, however im moving to a village that isnt a cable area. my ister has btvision at her house in that village and i tested the speed with newsgroup download at 3.5mbps which isnt ''too'' bad i guess. has anyone succesfully ran live off a similar connection? dont want any lag!! cheers

Got mine running using btvision and the basic bt braodband and there is no lag at all. My connection has upto 8meg download speeds though, however I normally only get about 4 or 5. You should be ok. It will depend upon how many other people are using the exchange as well and how far you are away from it. I'm sure someone more technically minded in this field will assist.

the lag is related to how many items of kit the packet has to pass through to get to the destination and how busy or congested the link / server , only a small part of the whole journey for the packet could be delayed with connection speed between your modem ( speed of light for electrical impulses ) and the local exchange which is typically just 1 of 20 hops I do not have lag problems with my 2400kbps download / 700kbps upload , but for hosting a game server it would be better to have as much upload as possible traceroute would give you a better idea of the delays on each hop and how many

Lag is due to the amount of ms it takes to respond to your host. Cable is massivly laggy due to the Coax cable into the house(half-duplex). it will be better on ADSL even if it's not as fast download speed. For best results get your line switched onto FAST channel rather than interleaved. This will reduce the latency of your ADSL line.

What your postcode as the BT checker is very conservative on the speeds... Mine say I should only be getting 3.5 Mbps

From the sam knows page

According to BT Wholesale, your phone line should be able to support a 3Mbps or greater ADSL connection via ADSL Max.

You are approximately 1.46km from the exchange. Note that this is the straight line distance - the actual cable length will be longer!
