This has probably been asked loads of times but I could not find anything on the search! How do you remove the V at the front? I want to remove it and spray it black. Thanks

Yes - O is right.

I did mine [before removing it]

Mask up the whole of the front clam - dont bother about masking the grille, it probably could do with a respray!

I sanded it down first with some wet and dry [1200]

3 coats of primer
4/5 coats of satin black
2 coats of primer

[out of memory]

Job done! :P

It still looks great - sat in the shed ;)

Here is mine before I removed it. [and done other mods :P ]

Sounds like a right pain in the arse :( I was hoping it would be a reversible type mod, just buy a new one, re-spray and stick it on. Obviously not. :beat:

Yeh, I had assumed this would be an easier job too. What is stopping people getting it off?

It's screwed on from behind.

Taking the clam off isn't the end of the world.

Just out of curiousity, how long does it take to get the clam off? Are there any other jobs worth doing at the same time while it's off?

If you've never done it before and take it really slow - a couple of hours. There's just about a dozen bolts to remove, then you lift it off slowly (pref with 2 people). No other jobs worth doing that I can think of. I also took the clam off another time to adjust my door hinges but don't touch them if they're ok - potential to f*ck up the alignment bigtime.

If you want to remove the V and badge [they are one unit] without the clam being removed then you need to butcher it. I used a soldering iron to melt the plastic from the screws, then undid the undertray bolts to tap the screws out from the clam. No marks at all left on the car from the exercise. If you want an intact V then its clam off.

Yes. Unmarked. But you may want to buy a can of satin black from Halfords to tidy it up abit - as it will be on show without the V! ;) [click on the sig]

just a follow on question...my VX had its V painted black. The problem is its all chipped (not from stones - way too many to be stone chips), probably from the dodgy job VXL did when the last owner asked for it done...is it possible to get the original silver V back from underneath? Will it be a clam off? AND how much is a new V, if i cant restore it? and do VXL (i know it would be loads but just as a comparison) still sell them for the VX? cheers guys tom

is there a step by step guide to taking the clam off with photo's for each stage? would be better than just a load of text (as on the diy guide)

here's a guide 'clicky , it along with loads of others can be found in the useful tread collection in the sticky section of VX220 Disscussion.

Someone did a pdf version as well, but not sure where that is.

Ok - just to prove I dont think you have bad breath :P

I take it you want to strip it back???

For a proper finish without doing a bodge job I would take the V off the car to strip it. [Clam off]

Just sand it down so that its down to the plastic/primer - then start all over again.

Plastic primer
Silver paint
Lacquer

If you dont take the V off then you may find it a PITA to strip off - painting is OK when its on the car. But prep work is the most important part of any bodyshop job.

If you wanted a new V from VXL your looking at about £100 [so ive been told]

Or, you can just look for one on ebay/scrappies.

I didnt realise how much mine costed when doing this to it!:-
