Not great with working out gearbox ratios but im after an f23 with a long 1st gear,

Struggling with the current one fitted to my rallycross car (being way to short) Im loosing time off the line having to change up very early, anyone have any idea what the most suitable F23 box would be?

Cheers Peter.

I’m not sure to the answer to your question but mines standard and does nearly 40mph in first.
Is that classed as short? Or is yours a lot less?

Std Turbo gearbox on mine

N/A F23 or Turbo?

Few options from other cars but the starter motor position is different between turbo & N/A

Apoligies, I should have been more specific with what I'm running,

Engine is an Astra VXR turbo
Gearbox is an f23 of unknown origin but I'm guessing not vx220 (possibly zafira)

Normally you have the letter code easily readable to retrieve all the specifications...

The gearbox from the like of a Corsa / Astra diesel (check Alphacode as noted) has about the longest 'standard' gearing, using the longest FD ratio (3.63) and comes with the WR - Wide Ratio 1st - 5th gears.

The 1st gear may be better, but the rest may be too long.

I think a sequential will be the eventual route but for now I just need to sort this short 1st gear,

We ran a diesel Maveria f23 box early on in testing which had a suitable long first but as mentioned the trouble was that it had a long everything else to go with it!

We are changing the clutch this week so I suppose I was hoping to find a middle ground f23 with long ish 1st and usable 2nd to 4th (we never get to see 5th on a standard box as rx tracks are short)

I have never used a vx220 box, turbo or non turbo as we built the car from a bare shell and had no original parts to start off with...maybe thats the way to go.

There's all the gearboxes and ratios:

And gearbox calc.

The VX220 gearboxes are nothing special, just taken out of a different Vauxhall somewhere, so you're not missing out on some special ratio gearbox.

What about the closest ratio box you can find and start in 2nd instead?

Looking at the above link it looks like all the F23 variants have the same first gear ratio. I think Vocky pulled some shafts out of a compatible Alfa box, that might be different, maybe he can add some info.

A lot of us find 1st gear far too short, it's quite a commonly perceived issue really.
