Fuel Overflow When Filling Up

Hi,

This may sound like a silly question, but is there a technique to filling up a VX220?  I ask because everytime I fill it up when the pump clicks it then immediately overflows some from the filler onto the bodywork.  Doesn't give me chance to do anything about it.  Never had this happen with any other car in 25 years of driving.  Just wondered if the nozzle is meant to be inserted at a particular angle (oo-er missus), if I'm doing something wrong or more a problem with the car.  

Or perhaps the answer is never fill it to max.  Tried that last time, but then the click caught me off guard and, hey presto, overspill.

I've not tried it all the way upside down, have tried it turned to the side.  As you say it's tricky given the shape of the clam around the filler is fiddly to not foul it.

Shall try upside down. Not something I have done before with any car but if that's the technique.

By the way, thumbs up on the Daimler in your footnote.  Do love a Daimler and Jag.  Got an '03 XKR myself, along with a '73 Beetle that is being restored.  It's nice to have different cars for different needs/occasions.

That specific angle is working for me for 90% of the nozzles.
I keep a clean cloth nearby for the other 10%.
First click you hear is a warning shot. Any attempt to add another drop will practically guarantee spillage.

It's a funny little car.

I hold the nozzle at about 8 o clock, putting my left hand under it flat to prevent it touching the clam.
That specific angle is working for me for 90% of the nozzles.

You can't. That is a bit like feeding a gremlin after midnight.

I have never had a problem with overflow at all on mine.  Never go past the first click and hold the nozzle at around 4 o'clock to get it nice and deep in the tube.  If you've ever had the rear clam off you will see this puts the spout at approx the same angle as the filler neck
