Except stick-on plates are not legal and they look crap. When I bought my VX it came with one fitted and the dealership said it was legal when I asked. Wasn't sure, so checked again at an MoT station on the way home and they said it wasn't legal. It's not legal on two counts - not type approved (irrespective of font, spacing or reflectivity) and not mounted to a vertical surface. Hmmmmm! So just wondering what is the deal with my 1965 "E" Type Jaguar ? This passes its MOT every year for the last 46 years. And there a lot of other cars out there with stick on plates............including my VX which has just passed its MOT also. Just asking........not looking for a war here. Korkey.

Think it relates mostly to modern cars, like post 2001. The MoT guy had to check with whoever the government MOT people are as he wasn't sure himself. The E-type apparently passes as that was the way the car was originally supplied and it's obviously considered a classic and not covered by modern legislation. My car has passed it's MoT with the 3/4 plate fitted on the front for the last 3 years as I always forget to replace it with the full size one that I had done on previous years. So go figure.

Well, the full size plate was put back on 6 days ago (after it was on the dash for a few) and its been knocked off 3 times in 3 different locations already! I've just read on SELOC its a lesser fine to have no plate than to have an illegal plate.. The last occassion was whilst pulling on to the driveway of an Auto Express reviewer where he was waiting outside - crunch - that's a great introduction!
