It's got some blue speaker without covers in at the moment. Are these the standard ones or something someone has added. I'd like to change them. I appreciate the VX is about teh soudn system, but coming from one car with BOSE and the last one with the full BMW Dsp audio, I miss listening to my music. (note this is when sitting in boring commutes, not when I should be listenig to the charger whining thumbsup ) Anyway the headunit is a sony, with cd and ipod cable. Will I be able to get a half decent sounding set of speakers to fit the current locations. I can add something more, but concious of adding weight.

Don't know what speakers they are you have there but the speaker mounts in the rear are just standard 16cm, There are literally millions of speakers in this size thankfully, so it's all down to taste and wallet size :) I fitted front speakers too in a couple of the air vent holes 10cm seakers fit without too much bodging, helped a lot as I found with just the rears once i was moving at motorway/a-road pace I couldn't hear them over the road noise without having them at a deafing level, front speakers help with this :)

Thought there must have been some Fife connection!

Dont know why more people havent done it, it doesnt really effect the windscreen demist! :)

After I removed the dash top one day, I forgot to connect them back up and could hardly hear the stereo at any volume, so makes a big difference to what you hear.

To the OP, if you do fit the front speakers dont forget to block off the airvent channels under the dash top, Steve used some polystrene blocks in mine

Yes, sounds like the standard ones without the covers.

Cheap and nasty cardboard things that look like that will fall apart any minute = standard :D

I can reccomend the component Vibe Airs, they are Designed for 'supercars' so are light weight, fit perfectly and the sound quality is 10 times better than the sh!tty standard things.
Various pictures of them installed here

Your best bet is a set of components but you'll struggle to mount the tweeters in a suitable place, most fit them in the sill covers which isnt ideal but its about the best place to put them in a vx without making custom molds to house them. You can obviously buy a better specced pair of coaxials as per factory fit, which would be a direct swap, personally if i was to spend on audio though id go the components route

I have some earthquake co-ax's in mine. I dont think you can get much sound quality (prepares for flaming) without adding some sound deadening to dull the outside noise a touch.

Just don't fit a set of 1" or 2" tweeters oonly as the sounds gets weird after a particular volume level.... Freddy sounded a little bit nasal at 70mph (sorry Turbobob)

Some good ideas there, thanks guys. I'm glad I'm not the only one that has decided it needs upgraded. I thought I was going to get abuse for tarting up the audio in my GoKart. Front speakers in the vents sounds quite neat, any pictures of the install? Shame I can't see some of these things in the flesh at the National, but I'm on a stag do that weekend.

Whilst the topic is alive... What 4" or 10cm speakers did people fit to thier cars? Been having another browse and there are a set of in-phase that have a mounting depth of 5cm, but my gut instinct is that the would probably be a touch too deep. Or would they fit, with the ducting still in place, but bunged up?

Plenty of room. Dash is probably 30mm+ thick and the ducting is similar.

Good point... Think I have moved the spare top into the coal-shed/out-house so will have to check when I get home

You can go nuts but I fitted these:

http://caraudiosecur...cts_id/504.html

I cut the screw holes off to make them round and they fit (albeit a bit of cutting of the vent mounts) in the vent holes in the indent snuggly. The ducting went back on without any trouble. If I was to do it again I would buy some with grills, but other than that its a great cheap aural win.

Champion... This is what I was looking at: http://www.caraudioc...c42_p-19733.htm Reviews on them seem to come out pretty good, and for a sub-£20 speaker it seems like a pretty tidy driver.

I fitted a set of Vibe Black Air 1 tweeters to mine plugged into the spare 2 channels on the head unit. Really brings the sound stage forward but sounds very subtle.

Seems like the "in thing" for vans. Should be perfect for the VX.
