Champion... This is what I was looking at:

http://www.caraudioc...c42_p-19733.htm

Reviews on them seem to come out pretty good, and for a sub-£20 speaker it seems like a pretty tidy driver.

Look good, the faff will be getting the grills something to grip to as they're bigger than the speakers but probably just big enough to be hovering over the slant on the indent for mounting. Something to work out though and may be ok. A couple of hours of swearing and bodging fabricating and you'll be happy as larry with the results. :)

I wish I'd thought of this before fitting my tweeters. Is the treble not a bit harsh from fitting a set of 10cm speakers which directly fire into the window? I would guess (hope) my tweeters give slightly better stereo imaging because they are pointing directly at the listeners ears.

Nah, its not exactly pacha in there but its far from tinny. Brings the range of sound forward, not just the high frequencies. Did u put a crossover inline to your tweeters?

That is what I initially tried, with two sets of 1" dome tweeters, one acting as a tweeter and one as mid/bass

Went out and looked at my spare dash and a 5cm deep speaker should fit (just)

Yea it came with an inline crossover. Bye bye tweeters if they're fitted without a crossover!

If the extra speakers are in the black plastic sill cover, then that was a tubby only option.

To really improve the sound you need a nice subtle sub behind the seats. I wouldn't have thought any speakers would produce bass response worth talking about where the VX's speakers are mounted. Theres nothing for the speaker to resonaate in. I haven't sound trebles an issue in the VX - but bass is very poor. My cheap pioneer head with a pair of average alpines is good enough to be heard with the roof down at motorway speeds with the sub connected up thumbsup

Where on earth have you managed to find space to mount a sub! Only option I thought of for more base was the rear parcel shelf. Was glancing at it today and wondering if I could fab a very small box section, wrapped in alcantara or similar and fit 2 x 6"x9" there. Not sure if it would fit though tbh, or whether you would need an amp to run it. Then you have to mount the small amp in the dash or again behind seats. Haven't touched audio in 10 years since I had my 1.2 clio (bless it)

:yeahthat:

I have the very same sub although I put mine behind the drivers seat to give the sound some room to get out(as I'm a short arse)

Sounds awesome!

New speakers have arrived and actually look really well made:

Gonna have a look at fitting them tomorrow aft, when I am not looking at/playing with someonelses VX Posted Image

Drivers are nicely 102mm wide, but with a voice coil/magnet arrangement of just 72mm, so should drop in just lovely.

Speaker covers/grill measure in at a whopping 130mm (approx), so some tinkering my well be needed.

Look forward to see how you fab up the grills on those front speakers. Sub looks very neat. You got a link or a name so I can google it. Looks like the amp might be built in to it?

Please dont think I'm a chav. I'm nearly 49 so dont go around annoying people with my car shaking with bass.

Its a small powered sub by Kenwood and sits nice and unobtrosivly on the shelf. It is secured with velcro.

Bit like this: There are nrewer and smaller ones out there now. Mines 6 years old.

It produces far more bass than I can handle but used senstivly it enhances the fairly standard speakers to make it sound like a good stereo in a nornal car.

Yep the amp is built into it. It is the Boss Bass600 and was about a hundred quid.

Very tidy little peie of kit.

Now for the the front speakers, it turns out I miss judged the size slightly and they won't just drop in, as the terminals stick out about 8-10mm too much, so will probably require a small amount of the vent hole chopping out. Fortunately the grill will sit atop of the speaker driver and looks pretty good, finishing off the unit.

The question I need to decide is do I dare start cutting into my near perfect dash (fitted) and just hope that any parks from the dremel don't set the dash alight :o or mod up
my spare dash and recover it, then when ready pull the old one out and fit the new one?

Hmmm decisions decisions.

Well, I avoided the dremel and used a spare dash unit I have.

Here are some pictures of the work in progress:

Basically, there is a metal mounting bracket under the plastic tube that fits inside the hole. If you have a reasonable vegetable knife you can cut round the edge of it, then juts peel it out.

All you have to do then is gently cut shavings in the section underneath so the carcass can fit into the newly enlarged aperture. Slowly take this away until you have a snug fit.

The beauty with these speakers is that the cover nicely sits on top of the dash and looks pretty much like it should always have been there. In addition the mounting points also sit on the lip and the screws nip into the dash top and anchor the speaker in place.

It's got some blue speaker without covers in at the moment. Are these the standard ones or something someone has added.

I'd like to change them. I appreciate the VX is about teh soudn system, but coming from one car with BOSE and the last one with the full BMW Dsp audio, I miss listening to my music. (note this is when sitting in boring commutes, not when I should be listenig to the charger whining thumbsup )

Anyway the headunit is a sony, with cd and ipod cable. Will I be able to get a half decent sounding set of speakers to fit the current locations. I can add something more, but concious of adding weight.
