Hi, my company have announced the start of a 30 day consultation period for redundancy before they announce who's actually going. I assumed the 30 days is 30 calendar days but my boss thinks it's 30 working days (so 6 weeks). Can't find any info on tinternet, does anybody here know please?

It's been 30 calendar days on the 2 rounds I've done. TBH it's a formality normally :( Make sure your CV is up to date and start getting it out there.

30 calendar days. Only required if >30 people are being made redundant from a similar demographic. I'm a consultation rep at our place. This is time for your reps to negatiate terms on your behalf. Make sure they do.

Cheers fellas both for the info and the finger crossing. They need to reduce overheads by about 40% and my department (technical) are quite expensive and at the moment pretty useless as there is nothing for us to engineer as we have not been getting any new jobs in...so we are an expensive luxury unfortunately. There are only 2 of us plus the technical director and my colleague handed his notice in last week, plus my director has just told me he has accepted a job in Dubai so only me left! I can't do this job without their support so I will either be made redundant or have to leave :( . Could be a blessing in disguise, in a way it gives me the freedom to do things I probably wouldn't do otherwise. In fact I might start another thread in a minute with a poll to get opinions on what I do next...

keep your cards very close to your chest, if they want to make you redundant then negotiate a compromise agreement, they can't put someone in your place for six months, so ask for that in salary at the least plus additional losses to pension , any other perks. meantime spend office hours searching for something new and polish up that CV, do any training that you can.

I'm a civil/structural engineer so that route wouldn't be ideal, thanks for the suggestion though :) .

I think would be probably be unreasonable of me in all fairness, I've only been there just over 18 months.

Have sorted my CV now (minus some minor changes my boss pointed out) and will be maximising on learning what I can before going, plus my boss has some good contacts for me thumbsup

Ahhhh so thats why where I was did 99 then 51

The 'consultation period' is merely a speed hump for them, they can/will chuck you out if they want to.

If its possible to volunteer for it and get more, I would :) (infact I did  )

It might be worth taking advice from somewhere that isn't a forum. Compromise agreements are complicated and the clauses within them, differ from agreement to agreement. The difference in payout between people that read them, understand them and fight for what is reasonably theirs can be stark. Often, remaining holiday, pension, benifits (such as a company car) etc etc are 'forgotten'.

I was in your position last year having worked for the company for 7 years. I was completely gutted when I wad handed the brown envelope and desperately wished I'd have taken the voluntary which was offeredthe week previous as I would have taken home double the payout. That said, 2 days later I was offered a job abroad and I have not looked back since. I have doubled m salary and have experience of a new language and culture - which I would never had the opportunity to do before because I am a little conservative by nature. Being pushed turned out to be all the encouragement I needed. Whatever happens I wish u all the best mate, just try to look at it as an opportunity - having nothing to lose is sometimes an advantage :)
