Okay, I have been thinking of getting an old banger to do track days in, was offered a mrk 1 MR2 for £100 but it needs a bit of work, great I thought perfect track toy, but, priced up the bits, and it would owe me a fortune. So though Renault GTA (A610), asked my dad about the one on Auto trader for £700, as he used to work on them, and he's advised me not to touch it with a barge pole. Someone told me about a Mazda 323 4x4 Turbo rally prepped with spare wheels and everything on E-Bay for £500, but I just missed it. Thought Alfa 75 3.0 (rear wheel drive), but you try finding a straight one. Kit cars, all over £6000 this time of the year. Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9, a lot of money for what they are. 309 Gti, possible? Have been offered a BMW 325i E30 for £250, but I was thinking its a bit oversteery, still, could be a laugh, and for £250 I can still get a set of sticky tyres and suspension, wont worry about brakes as I dont intend stopping much. Can anyone think of something I missed, I dont want to spend a lot, as it will only be used a few times a year, as a stress toy. By the way, I meant Best, not brest for all the perves who logged on getting excited, you know who you are, freaks.

309/205 GTI will be fun but FWD and ultimately won't be as chuckable. Plenty of them already been "trackday'd" up with cages, harnesses, stripped, etc 325 will be a right laugh but will be expensive to run (tyres, petrol and especially brakes) Avoid anything turbo'd

I'd go for a 205 GTI or a Sierra Cosworth.

I'd consider either a Mk2 Escort RS2000 or a R5 Turbo2 (RWD fun) I also know a few lads with 2ltr 16v Novas which are quick track cars. I think I'd probably end up getting either a 209 1.9 GTI as I used to own a race spec one on the road as a kid and I know how good these are ... esspecially with an MI16 engine. Or possibly hold out for a 106 Rally(1.6 16v) increadble cornering ability

I'm edging towards the 325i, Yoko tyres are cheap for it, suspesion kits are less than £200, and £250 for a car that I used to dream of when I was young, I can't go wrong.

325 will be great if the car's OK, but for £250 it could be a bit of a money pit. HG's are v.sensitive to overheating, and sills and arches are prone to rust. If its a good'un, you won't find much better fun per pound. Capri is another option (did you see the article in Practical Performance car about fitting a 5l V8 in a capri for under 4k? One thing I'd considered a few times was picking up an old Skoda Rapide (rear engined one) and a bottle of Nitrous - probably blow the thing up in a day, but you can just get anohter one for £50!

Wayne looked over a 205 1.9 GTI today, pretty good nick. Told I'm not allowed to spend money needlessly, as buying the hotel, these are good beginers cars for track. As andy says not the same as rear wheel drive but still fun none-the-less. Oh price for this was £225. Ian

I used to do a few track days at knockhill and was amazed that my mates 1400 Fiesta stripped out with twin 40's solid suspension and slicks would have a similar lap time to me with a 250bhp Calibra Turbo. He could waste me in the corners but I could then catch him on the straights.

not getting this... isn't the objective/purpose of the VX (and Elise) to have a car you can use every day AND on the track ?? why drive something worth 250 quid on the track when you have a 'track' inspired car sitting at home ?? the cheapest trackday car is the VX.... treat it as your track day car and hobby, and then it's cost/depreciation etc is easily absorbed - rather than buy another car, tax it, trailor it... etc.... if worried about damage then insure it.... don't worry that it will be driven fast, brakes will get hot etc etc - that's what's it's designed for and easily capable of enduring..... like the adverts etc - 'never tracked' if a car has been looked after then it will make no difference to it being tracked or not.... just IMHO Mick

What you laughing at, girly boy, I bet I give you a run for ya money in me 205 gti, (although I may have to let your tyres down first) :D

Problem is, my VX is a company car, and as such it would prove bloody expensive getting fired.

I thought at least with a banger, 1) it doesn't matter if I only use it 3 times a year, I work most weekends so a lot of track days wouldn't be possible 2) doesn't matter if I hit a tyre wall, I probably will you see 3) The wife wont go too mad if I only spend £1000, if I bought a Westfield, she may leave me, hold on, if she leaves me, that frees up a lot more cash and time, I can buy a Radical and pi55 all over you, now theres a thought.

205 gti is now looking good, now where did you find that one for a couple of hundred squid Rubber?

Any idea how much he wants for his 106? By the way Shiny Andy, brilliant idea, hadn't thought of looking on bookatrack site, trouble is now I want to spend £10k plus, on a race car. Cheers all Wayne
