Same engine as JGs GTD. Goes well, economical etc.

Google '170 dpf problems'. Appears to be more prolific on the VAG 170s than offerings from other manufacturers. Believe that 140s do not have DPF (or did not until very recently). Otherwise the cars look ok outside but interior fit and finish looks to be where they save money over equivalent Golf / A3. I'd also check if they are still using a cheaper turbo than the equivalent engine in Golf/Audi.

Remove the DPF altogether. Then quick trip to Revo or similar and a new map with the EGR and DPF functionality deleted and no more problems. I think the bigger potential issue on the VAG 2.0 TDI's are the injectors.

Only on the older PD engines. The CR engines don't suffer with injectors. Common Rail engines were introduced in VAG cars in 2008.

Engine is great! Feels like a petrol, sounds a bit odd with the sound generator (though 99.99% of the population wouldn't realise it was generated), neither dieseley nor petrolley, but quite good. Dunno if the FR retains the sound generator:

I doubt DPF would be a problem witht he milages cliffe will be doing. However does that use the cam driven PD injectors? I was talking to a cabbie about VAG 1.9 vs 2.0 and he said there are problems with the cams not being hardened enough on the 2L and he'd just had to shell out 2k to get new ones fitted

a chap at my old work had one as his company car and he loved it. It used to eat tyres on the front for fun (possibly because he loved to wheel spin it from standing start). i drove it on a few occasions and must admit that i wish id had one!

I'm no mechanic but could've sworn I was told that 2.0TDi was common rail back in 2005 when I was trying to make a living at an Audi dealership

Certainly not in the Passat/Golf.... I know that because I own a 58 plate passat and was told that was the era the cross over happened :) i.e. if you happen to look at one, a simple glance under the bonnet is enough to tell :) Plastic rocker covers are different (and different oil fillers) between the 2.0 PD and 2.0 CR.

so you will have a PD engine Cliffie, where the injectors are subject to recall. I'll see if I can dig out a link. and won't be as high MPG as the CR engined cars (not sure if that matters)

Another problem with VAG 2.0 TDi's is the oil pump mechanism....big bucks to fix!! 40 odd page topic on Audi-sport about this issue.
