Hi Guys I have recently spent a fair bit of time at the local drag strip with a visiting Photographer and was wondering what sort of 1/4 mile times have been done in a standard VX220 Turbo. Really tempted to try mine down there. Cheers from NZ

It'll be disappointing.... the VX really isn't designed for 1/4 milling as it just kills mounts etc.

11.3 was my best 1/4 mile time (santa pod) with slipping clutch and approx 320bhp. Sure there are a couple of low 12 sec runs of it on the tube somewhere but 63 runs iirc in a day finally resulted the 11.3 as I could not give it full abuse all the time. Expect once the paddle was in it would have been a lot closer to an 11 dead DG

Personally, I can't think of anything more boring and sh!t than repeatedly nailing the car in a straight line. I've seen those jet fuel powered things with parachutes at Santa Pod and managed about 30 minutes of that before deciding that was just as crap and pointless as some fool in a 1.2 Corsa doing the same from a set of traffic lights. To me, it's lower down the totem pole than lawnmower racing.

So, because of my total lack of interest, I've got no frame of reference to go on. What is considered a "fast" car? I see Duncan talking about 11 seconds, is that quick for a normal car? Is a 10 second car really really quick for a road car? How do those times compare to 0-60 or 0-100 (equally sh!t measure as well but at least I can understand those)? How do those times compare with "supercars"? Does having a car that could only do it in 15 seconds instantly mean you've got a sh!t car and must be one down in the gonad department? Does not giving a sh!t what time your car is capable of instantly turn you into a eunuch?

Techie mine was 3.6 to 60 8.3 to 100 iirc at final spec Tweaked R35 GTR I was against previously was doing 11.6 as ref on sticky rubber and these put in good times with 4wd traction etc a low 11 sec car will leave most super cars way back until about 120mph in a vx. Friend Chris R5 clio / turbo conversion is running about 600bhp now iirc and doing 10.3sec run and sure thats 2 sec 0-60 Of course I have no care for my own transmission or clutch :P I expect a 10sec run from the vag conversion and a solid 8sec dead to 100 but gearing will play its part along with the fact its not my clutch or car will not be ringing a few .seconds out of it DG

A standard Honda Fireblade did it in 10.2 with me hanging on for dear life so anything around that time is as quick as a fast sports bike. A Ferrari 458 will probably pass in mid 12s.

I think lawnmower racing probably has the edge 'imho'

I have and that's where some of the problems come from, though at least they've managed to go round corners as well in that. I also read some American forums that use similar engines to ours. They all seem to start having a wankfest whenever somebody says they're going to build a 12 second car or something and then it starts into a bun fight when somebody else says something different. It just flies over my head as I sit there in total ignorance and uninterest. If somebody came on here and said they'd made an 8-second car, I'd think "so what" and wouldn't have any idea if that was possible or just plain bullsh!t. I'm sure something can do it in 5 seconds but again, so what. It's just an extension of the pub pissing contest as far as I'm concerned.

I've spent some time at the Pod.

Any car doing in the region of 11 seconds is seriously quick.

This was my Pod toy for a while, best it managed was 11.3 with a guy driving who knew what he was doing.

And before anyone asks, it did not go round corners, it was built purely as a 1/4 mile sprint car.

I've been to Santa pod a few times over the years and i find it quite enjoyable in its own way. I know the VX is not about sstraight line speed and all that crap but whats wrong with seeing waht it can do in a straight line too. Most of the track days I've been on have straights and personally I find it useful have a good straight line speed as it makes up for my lack of ability in the corners (note I said 'MY' and not 'MY CARS'.)

The PV show is a laugh and useful for both showing up a few chavs in thier VXR's and being put in yuor place by some seriously quick Novas!

Anyone going this year? 10th June
