@vaux2008 how long were you away covering your 2300miles ?? - set route/hotel stops or where the map & road took you ?

We were away 10 days. We booked the hotels before we went so we knew we had somewhere to stay when we got to our destinations. We just set the sat nav to the destinations and followed that, unless we wanted to divert onto smaller roads and then the road map came out which makes it even more of an adventure. And before anyone says that motorways are boring they are wrong. The motorway from Monaco into Italy turns into a race track with sweeps and bends you can enjoy.

Where is the old race circuit in Riems ? We stayed in Riems on the way down to Italy and I forgot all about it, I'd like to get a pic of the VX there. As for distance in the VX we did 1016 miles yesterday from Toscana to home. 16 hours and 5 mins door to door which included 4 fuel stops and coming through the tunnel. I now have a nice collection of European insect life on the front of the car.

1016...all with roof off? Most weve done so far was on the first day going from Calais to Reims (to see Cathedral) then on down to Nancy to stay the night.

The old pit lane/straight is just on the western outskirts of Reims on the D27.

Thanks Matthew, I just checked the map and we stayed literally 3 mins from there. With the roof off Chris ? We had both windows fully open but the car was to full to put the roof anywhere.

its not that difficult with google maps, and booking.com hardest part is staying in budget and finding the interesting roads, site seeing places.

Exactly what sizeten said. I didn't have a clue what Routes, towns, hotels, sights etc. I just looked on here and ph for inspiration and to get ideas on routes I just used google maps.

We stopped mainly at cities like Reims, Lyon, Monaco, bologna, Zurich and Luxembourg. It was great we are now organising next years trip around the Swiss alps and Italian lakes as the roads are awesome.

If you want any inspiration on anything don't hesitate to ask. Reims and Monaco are a must visit and don't be put off by motorways because they are a joy, especially the one along the coast between Monaco and italy, it's like a race track with sweeping bends and slight banking in places.

As above, I tried to drive through Genoa last year rather than take the motorway, however, you must seek out the Route Napoleon the drive from Menton to Sisteron was epic. Even the other half wanted to re-plot this years route so that we could do it again, but alas...
